hey guys. sold off my only pair of black dress shoes- johnston and murphys, in order to get something a bit nicer in allen edmonds. been eyeing the Cornwallis and the more i look at it the more i want a pair. should i grab these in black?? or go for something like a PA in black and get Cornwallis in brown? the black wont get worn quite so often but had to upgrade as the johnston and murphys were a bit too large for me anyway

Is it Allen Edmonds?

There's a few pictures of Bill Clinton kicking balloons around. I know he loves his shoes and is a bit of an AE fanboy.

I'll certainly apply whatever deal he can make me towards another pair of shoes. If I can get them reduced to even $75, i'd keep them for foul weather. Maybe they'll age well. If he can't do anything, i'll just exchange them for another pair anyway. I was in the outlet store near me trying on some Maritimes (man - i just couldn't find a pair that fit me!) and showed the guy there the pictures. He was even shocked at the one shoe.

On another note - were any of you guys the seller of the shell Leeds I bought on ebay today? Got a really decent deal as the one shoe has some more severe than usual ripple in the creasing. I think they'll be really nice.

I think you have a decent shot at further price reduction.  I bet that shoe has been in their inventory for a while, so if they can drop a little bit on the price and get you to keep them, that should be a no brainer for AE.

I think I know what Leeds you are discussing and I do know who the seller was.  I looked at them for a long time, but didn't love the creasing either.  I ended up with a pair of vintage Crown Windsors to fill that spot in my closet.  However, they are really tight and unbroken in, currently have them on the stretcher.

I loved those Bill balloon pics! You can tell that he's super excited for all of Hillary's time to be occupied by the rigors of high office. wink.gif

And I appreciate your double contraction! What part of TX are you from? I was raised in San Antonio.

1)  2nds Cordovan Cambridge
2)  2nds Hopkinson Merlot
3)  Park Avenue Merlot
4)  Randolph Merlot
5)  Bainbridge Navy
6)  Strandmok Navy
7)  Dark Chili Cornwallis
8)  Walnut Strand
9)  Bourbon Mora

I'll admit I went a bit overboard but I had to see them in person as I don't have an AE store close.

So there it is, what do you think?  What would you keep?  If you could keep 2-3 and return the rest?

When you love Allen Edmonds like we do you want to keep them all but I refuse to be a slave to a credit card. LOL.

I'm assuming they all fit well and are in acceptable condition (though I think I recall the Cambridges were sketchy). For me, I'd go:
Merlot Hopkinson - I have this and it's extremely versatile. Also makes the PAs OBE - too similar to justify both.
Chili Cornwallis - I bought these and would be wearing the hell out of them if the last was compatible with my foot. Alas, they are incompatible, so they went back.
Bourbon Mora - if bourbon is done well, I think it looks fantastic in plainer shoes, and the mora is quite versatile - can easily cover jeans to casual suits. Bourbon is also discontinued, so there is a limited window for this. I have a pair of these as well.

I love navy, so one of the options you listed would be a runner up. Cambridges would probably be return and buy firsts when a new store opens ... Randolph doesn't do it for me, but if you love it consider swapping it for one of my top 3. Walnut strands will always be available, so no hurry there.

Best of luck deciding!

Disclaimer: the barnweasel answer is - keep them all and buy more!

I agree with these choices 100%.

I would definitely return the Cambridge. It's an odd shoe. A dressy Oxford, but in shell and with a double sole. Too confused, IMO.

If it were me, I would keep the chili Cornwallis and the burgundy loafer.

Few things more versatile than a brown Oxford (well, Adelaide) and burgundy loafer.

Return all the others, and maybe also pick up a black fifth Ave or Hopkinson (I actually think the "new" piping is classier - all my higher end shoes look like this.)

That is the first time I have actually seen a picture of the brown.  Is it similar to the Rush Street?  I actually like this one better.

I wear 7.5 EEE in Allen Edmonds, and even this is too narrow for my ultra-wide feet.  I have yet to meet an off-the-rack shoe that fits reasonably without compromise except for an Alden Modified last in 7 EEE size in a blucher (not balmoral).  Even this has the arch in a slightly too posterior position.  No European/Italian maker is going to accomodate my super-wide foot.  My unusual foot must be 4 sigmas away from average.

Did you do anything to the toe caps on those?  The color under the brown burnish is a lot lighter on mine.

Are you sure? I'm telling you Enzo Bonafe is worth a look. AE's shoes run narrow. I wear 10.5 EEE in AE but 10.5 E in Alden. My Enzo chukkas on the 946 last are in 10 UK H (F is standard), and they're perfectly wide enough in two dimensions. The reason they don't fit better is that instep is SUPER steep.

Additionally, for a very modest up charge, you can have Enzo make you a custom last to your measurements, including feathering beyond H width. If you're interested, get in touch with Lorenzo at Solegarb. I'm getting a custom last made through him for some boots.

And then, at some point, getting a custom pair from a real custom artisan like Meccariello begins to look like an excellent value, compared to several pairs from cheaper makers that don't fit well.

I really enjoy the positive conversation from the gentleweasels on this thread - it's largely a troll-free zone. That said, a small part of me is hoping for a flame war between you and @Lobster33 based on this comment ...
