Thanks for the response. I think the Cornwallis will be fine if I only wore them to work which is business casual 95% of the time and suit/tie 5% of the time. I'm hesitant though because I feel like they wouldn't be good with "going out" attire.

Another option I was looking at was black Chelseas. I already have a black captoe shoe that is "good enough" for work and a pair of formal looking loafers that I alternate.

Maybe the chelseas will be of better use for what I'm looking for in a shoe.

Personally I think chelseas are hideous and should not exist.  But I am probably in the minority there.

Ha! I'm the exact opposite! I love Chelsea's, but on me they look absolutely horrible.

Horror stories from days past.

I think the green (and maybe a red) thing was an experimental color, but they were never released. They did find their way onto eBay, so a few people are proud owners.

Actually I think they were indeed released, as a webgem. Morgan, I think? J

FWIW when I asked they said chili overtook bourbon for the brown other than brown option.

If you were starting your shoe collection from scratch and were to buy a pair of Cornwallis at $275, Strands at $275, and something else with the student interview offer at $350.  What shoe/current available color combos would you choose?

Attire being anything from a full suit, to slacks/odd jacket , to chinos/button down.

I had my sizing performed at an Allen Edmond's store for the fifth ave as a 10.5D.
For whatever reason the walnut strands feel a little more tight. how does the fit look based on these pictures?
Just wanted to know if the shoe is supposed to have such a wide V at the laces.

Bigger question is how they feel? If everything is where it needs to be and your toes aren't screaming, who cares about a little v. Sides don't seem to be bowing. It will likely stretch anyway and close up.

Welp, ebay happened.  My first venture into Alden.  Found a J Crew Indy boot, worn 5 times, for $320. Just heading deeper and deeper into the rabbit hole...

What colors are the Wallis and Strand?  Personally I really really like the Yorktown in chili and feel like that would fit your niche area.  But I'd say Warwick in oxblood or Yorktown in chili.

I guess that would depend on what your most common use is. Business casual? Suits? Jeans/Chinos? Assuming business casual I would say you could do strands or 5aves. I personally started with black PAs but have since put them away for the most formal occassions. Out of the options you offered I'd start with black 5 aves. Strands I like in the walnut but I wouldn't start with that shoe. I'm sure there are a million other opinions though.

Welp, just ordered a pair of McGregors in Chili and Strands in Bourbon. Wife is going to be so mad.

I have conservative tastes, so I would pick up any color of the Leeds or Carlyle.  Walnut Carlyle or Leeds would be a good choice, or oxblood.

If you are shooting for 3 pairs and wanted the most versatility:

1) Formal shoe in either black PA or FA.

2) Versatile shoe in oxblood Strand.

3) Semi-formal walnut Cornwallis

Or:

1) Formal shoe with black Cornwallis

2) Walnut or oxblood Strand

3) Burg/merlot or walnut wingtip (McAllister or MacNeil)

It all depends on how conservative the environment is on where you're working.

If you're in a conservative setting, I'd probably go:

Brown Cornwallis

Oxblood Strand

Black Park Avenue

If it's a little more casual, I'd probably go with the same first 2 choices, but then throw in a walnut McAllister or change the Strand to walnut and go with an oxblood Warwick, if monk straps are your thang.

All that being said, it's really super-dependent on your current wardrobe as well. I'd think you'd want to go 3 different colors for the 3 different shoes, regardless.

I have the white wedge sole and I like mine as well. Your soles i like the look of even more. Those look great man. Really like my Shannon Drives. Probably my top three shoes this summer will be the Shannon Drives, Khaki McTavish, and my copper Red Wing Postmans.
