Yours might be cordovan - they would have JR soles.

I think the division between those who wear fine footwear and those who do not are reflections of price, availability and a lack of role models. Many will reasonably question the potential benefit of paying higher prices for better shoes. I know I personally would, until the last year, top out around $125 as a price for a new shoe. That seemed to "do the job" and I fit right in with the vast majority of other shoe wearers. I only moved to more expensive shoes when I started to develop foot pain and found it difficult to find shoes that fit properly and did not cause pain.

The second major barrier for many is that men rarely encounter fine footwear in stores as an option. How many men stumble into the single AE store in Salt Lake? In my experience, I have to actively search to find better shoes and it is nearly always online and through the mail. I live in Los Angeles and I have to drive 75 miles in each direction to visit the one and only AE store in all of southern California. Really?? There are 22.6 million people in Southern California and only one tiny AE store.  California has 39 million people and there is one single Alden store 350 miles away from me. Compare this to plethora of other lower cost brands found in every mall and outlet center. People will buy what they find.

The price and availability does not even begin to address the social influence of athletes and Hollywood showing "celebrities" in baggy pants, sneakers, flat brim backwards hats and torn jeans. Sadly, I do not expect things to change much so I celebrate the very few individuals who do wear nice shoes. I just make of point of rewarding their efforts by offering a compliment.

You and I should open a store in Los Angeles.   :)

Completely agree.  I found out there used to be an outlet out here, but the location was a terrible choice for most people.   If AE opened an outlet in Burbank or Pasadena, I'm pretty sure they would make a lot of money.   The Costa Mesa store is nice, but it would be nice to have a store closer in the city.  Perhaps some of the reason is that AE has Nordstrom as their largest customer, and there's a lot of Nordstrom's in Los Angeles.

BTW, your Alden looks gorgeous.  Sometimes, less is more.  I understand your point of view though.

While we're on the PTB admiring kick, somebody should buy the Varno 2.0 PTBs in size 8E I just listed. ;)

Those are beautiful!  Would buy them if they weren't used.  How does it fit compared to the Leeds?  I see it's on the same last.

Shoebank has a pair of black Varnos in my size for only $107.  I don't need them though.

They should fit the same as the Leeds. Still has the leather insole. The only difference is the mini lug outsole.

Well I tried again but was unsuccessful in getting them to put the "shell only" sole (JR sole with dovetail heel) on a calf. I cannot for the life of me understand why since they allow custom sole orders. I offer to pay the difference and still no dice. Does calf have some kind of magnetic repellent of those soles because I cannot think of any reason why they wouldn't do this.

Would anyone be interested in these 8.5D cappuccino shell Bayfield MTO? Just an interest check since they might be on the chopping block in favor of something else to fill a void in my collection.

I remain confused as well. I do not think this is a JR sole on this pair of Westchesters, but it certainly looks nice with the dovetail heel. They certainly use it on non-shell shoes and I think it should be an option.

See, that shoe you have is another perfect example of another great-colored shoe that has been discontinued.  They don't offer any other similar shoe in that color except for the LAX, but I can't wear those because the rubber is too soft.

Yes, I might be interested.

Dovetail Pic! (Click to show)

I really do not understand. In one of their 2013 catalogs they have a "double leather" sole which shoes a dovetail to come with it. According to SA the dovetail is exclusive to shell and so is the JR sole.... Then we have shoes like the photo you just showed. It doesn't make sense.

I might be interested as well.  How much are you asking?
