I plan on purchasing a pair of AE black cap toe oxfords and have narrowed my choice down to the Hopkinson (calf) or the Park Ave in shell cordovan. Any thoughts?

I don't have any bourbon or walnut shade. Am I doing life wrong?

That would be tough choice, but for me it would come down to which last fit better.

+1. Both are nice options, which last fits you better?

@Paniolo I didn't find the Dalton narrow at all but it was bad enough for high arches that I went from a D to an E. They started off really good but once broken in I now feel like I have too much volume in the heel and ankle area. Uncomfortable enough that they don't get much wear. So I would say makes a significant difference, yes.

Go for fit. Shell is awesome, but I actually prefer calf for black dress shoes.

The Indy shoes have nice lining and details, but the cordovan models have awesome soles.

I have only tried on the Park Avenue and know that last fits well. I plan to try on the Hopkinson before purchasing. I suspect I will find a great fit in both, so I am wondering if my decision should be made based on other factors relating to materials and construction. For instance, the length of the toe cap, detailing on the welt, appearance of the leather when worn, type of sole, etc.

Definitely see if you can try both on, like others have said.

The Indy line shoes are really nice.

More importantly, however, is the fact that I find 5 lasted balmorals (Park Ave, Fifth Ave, Strand, McAllister) to be a very inelegant shape, particularly at the toe. The stubby caps on the PA/FA don't help either. For this reason alone I would likely eliminate a shell PA from the running and absolutely go with the Hopkinson.
