It doesn't seem to come up much, but does anyone else really like the 1943 last? I think it fits me better than the 5 and looks much less blobby.

I still haven't had a chance to try it, despite that I really like the Cornwallis and the new St. John's. But then, I still don't have an 8-last shoe either. Oh, the problems of living >2 hours from the nearest AE store! There's one store in town that sells them, but I hate the idea of going into a general menswear store just for sizing purposes. They had a trunk show last year, so maybe I'll stop in if they do it again.

I like the look of the 1943 last, but it requires some breaking in for me (my Cornwallis are somewhat painful by the end of the day). The 5 last requires virtually no break in for me

It was discussed quite a bit on the last thread (maybe it was just me). I'm ambivalent on the appearance of the 1943; I like the shape overall but the toe is a bit blunt for me. They make some great-looking shoes on the last, though, which easily overcomes any small nits I have to pick.

What sinks the 1943 for me is the fit - for my foot at least, it is horrifyingly bad. Supposedly it is based on the 333 but this is pure rubbish. The 333 is my best AE fit and the 1943 is by far the worst. Glad it's working for you though!

No experience with the 1943 last, but I will say, I don't like how the 1943 shoes do not have piping. Yeah, I know you're all tired of hearing me ***** about this. I've decided to start an online petition to bring back the old piping.

Even my Wilbert's that I'm using today have piping. I rarely wear these anymore it seems.

What edge dressing do you guys recommend for walnut colored shoes. Id like to maintain the natural color of the leather sole.

Went to my local AE store today to return two pairs of shoebank shoes that didn't work for me. While I was there I tried on a pair of the Boulder loafers and I liked them. The SA, who was an older man and told me he'd worked in the shoe business his entire life, fitted me into the 7D Boulders and thought they were a perfect fit. The length seemed right to me but it felt pretty tight on the ball of my foot. He told me that they'd stretch and be perfect, and that sizing up to a 7.5 would leave me with my heel slipping (they didn't have a 7.5 to try). I decided to order them in both a 7D and 7E, hoping that the additional width might give me just the room I need. Do you guys think this will help, or should I instead order them in a 7.5?

If it helps, I measured my foot when I got home and I have a length of 9 3/8 and a width of 3 6/8.

I grabbed a pair of McAllisters on eBay, only to discover I should have done more homework. The leather was different than I expected, and when I looked up the model (6275) it is corrected grain.

They've cleaned up decently, but I think I'm going to put them back out there and see if I can recover my $65...

I feel like you should just get a pair of shell Cambridges. (These are Jeffersons, but you get the point)

You gotta learn to trust me my friend.... :)

Anyway, I too found that the Grand Cayman (essentially the boulder with a bit and some cheesy croc print leather) felt right in a 7D. It is sort of narrowish throughout the main area but it is elongated and subtly squared off in the toe which sort of pushes it past 7 in length compared to other drivers. The 7.5D was horrible for me - way too long. I would recommend wearing them with overly thick socks (bite the bullet, 2-3 times tops) and that should stretch them out enough. They fit me better than the other drivers for sure - only thing I don't like, is that the leather (outside) is pretty tough, so if you attempt to go sockless, they'll rip apart your heel pretty badly.

(Edit) - actually, now that I thought it over....my apologies but how the hell did the guy fit you for the boulder? I'm assuming they had nothing in a 7 (that would be sacrilegious for AE) and the boulder 145 driver last is definitely weird and stands on its own compared to the others...

What did you wind up returning? The 6.5Es or the 7Ds?

I have the green Kirkwoods (wore them yesterday matter of fact) and that hasn't happened to me yet....
