Pardon the pics, these are literally taken in my closet, just quick brushed.

left to right

MTO black shell Ashton
MTO burgundy shell Ashton
MTO brown shell Benton
Trunk Show bottle green shell Leeds

The green looks lighter outdoors, this was early October:

BTW
I have only used Mac method + conditioner, Bick4 / VSC on any of these.

Did you move the Ashton and Benton to a leather sole or stick with the rubber?

These 4 are on rubber soles.  My shell collection was made when MTO gave us a choice, so...

of my 19 shell items, just 3 are on leather soles.

The last several pairs of AE's I have purchased that had leather soles did not have the wheeling. But they have butyl soles and maybe AE never did that on the butyl soles.

I do. It's basically a Strand with butter-soft Indy leather on the 201 last, with poron insoles, more forgiving instep and toe area a little longer and more tapered.

I have always been 7.5EEE, but after a recent visit to the local AE store, I was able to fit into an 8E Park Avenue wearing my thinnest socks as a better fit than the 7.5EEE.  I'm hoping an 8E shell cordovan will do the trick or I may have to go to completely uncushioned socks for all Balmorals.  I have a big drawer of wool Cushioned socks (Smartwool heathered rib) and uncushioned socks (Darn Tough Vermont Crew Light), and others which help me deal with variances in fit, and it gets confusing in the morning when I'm trying to rush out the door.

My only other alternative was to start fiddling with the Hopkinson and the 201 Last.  My local store did not have this in various sizes.

Have you given thought to trying an 8EE in 65 balmorals.  Most of the classics are available in EE widths, even if few brick and mortar stores have them in stock.

A review of the older catalogs from a decade or so ago frequently did not even have a cordovan section. The options for cordovan leather are simply listed as one of the colors available for a shoe, as seen in the Randolph from 2009. I guess my personal take home lesson is that whatever collection I create should still be evolving and that I should be prepared to accept that a "timeless" shoe actually does a "Best when used by" date.

Good Lord, the Hillcrest was no. 4?!?  How in the hell is that shoe that popular?  I've never seen anyone wear them (no offense to anyone who loves this shoe).

Surprised the Niles was not on the list.  I guess it wasn't as popular as it should have been.

Does anyone actually know what's going on with the shell trunk show? Seemed consensus was that it was getting postponed to Q1 2017, but I just got a response from AE customer service confirming the 10/23 date. The CS rep, however, was unable to provide further detail. This was the first trunk show I was going to get in on and am bummed that it appears to have been delayed.

I heard from A/E that it's going to be sometime in November.....they said more after RDA.

Is that a navy Park Ave on the left, or a black PA?  Hard to tell from the pics.

Agreed that it's very confusing right now, I was told on Monday ( Chicago store) that it's gonna be pushed to Jan/Feb next year. But there is no official word on it..

I've never seen one in person but I like the 5th Avenue better than the Park Ave.

My brannock is 8E which can work for me with balmorals on the 65 last however they do run tad long and are a bit tight at the ball even with a large V-gap. 7.5EEE feels like a larger shoe to me in general compared to the 8E. It is probably almost the same length but is slightly wider at the bal and has more room around the instep area.

7.5EE is just right for me. I will say that my 7.5EE calf McAllisters require a faily wide V-gap to begin with and by the end of the day can start feeling a bit tight on my right foot. My 7.5EE shell Strands are quite comfortable with a small V-gap and never cause me pain by the end of the day.

Based on your above post, I think your hypothesis of going with 8E in shell is most likely correct. A few questions to help me understand why the 8E was a better fit...

Did you feel that the 7.5EEE had a bit too much room around your instep? Was the ball slightly too wide? Was it a bit too short for you in comparison to the 8E? Where is the 8E tight for you that requires thin socks?
