Dude.  Do you have an Indy line shoe?  You'll be wishing every day was Wednesday #DYEWB?

No indy line, yet. Strong hunch I'll have a Bartlett soon. #dyeilb (do you even independence line bro)

Birthday dinner last night and an opportunity to bust out the bourbon for the first time. Lady friend wanted to be included, no those are not Goodyear welted but don't be too hard on her.

Taking a hungover day off to browse the SB sale...wish me luck.

It is definitely having operational issues. Either the host isn't capable of handling the capacity or they are still tinkering with updates. I see they added choice between 18 and 36 items per page as a drop down. I haven't seen any of our suggestions from a month ago make it to the site though.
Is anyone else having issues accessing SB this morning?

Yes. I got to the home page, but the search function wasn't working at all. Probably just a temporary glitch while they adjust things for the sale. They made some major changes yesterday (like going from displaying 18 results to 36 results on each page), so there must be some bugs to work out.

Ok, glad to know it isn't just me. May be pulling the trigger on some khaki McTavishes...

Need a new pair of black shoes for weddings/funerals/interviews. Since those things rarely happen, I am looking at less costly shoes. I have my eye on some MacNeil's. Would these shoes work well for the above mentioned purposes (with a black suit)? On shoebank, they are listed as "custom calf." What does "custom calf" mean?

Went with my Strands today since there was rain in the forecast yesterday. I added a small amount brown polish to the toe caps the other night and am very pleased with the results.

Far as I know the custom calf is their standard calf offering that comes on all shoes.

I don't know if I would go with a LWB for these types of occasions. If I was, I would probably check ebay or go with a closeout style like the McGregor if they have one in your size.

Personally, I would go with a black cap toe like a Park Avenue of Fifth Avenue or a whole cut like a Carlyle or Cornwallis. All of these options would be drastically reduced for the tent sale going on right now.

I second @MattRiv 's opinion. Park Ave of Fifth Ave for the occasions you are describing. See if they have the Brooks Brothers Fifth Avenue in your size, great option at $150.

Question for you other filthy barnweasels.

Today, I'm wearing my only pair of AEs that I'm not totally fond of. I speak of the brown Darmstadt. On paper, this shoe had exactly what I was looking for in a casual shoe that spanned seasons - distressed leather, Vibram lug soles, PTB, etc. I could wear it with jeans or chinos in all four seasons. Seemed like a no-brainer.

When I put them on, they felt pretty good. Not as great as I was hoping. But, given that I paid a whopping $97 for them off the Shoebank, I figured that pretty good was an OK substitute for that price point.

Fast forward a couple of months, and the problems with the Darmstadt became apparent. On the right shoe, one of the eyelets hits on a bone on the top of my foot awkwardly (totally my own issue due to a seriously mangled foot in a car accident). None of my other AEs do this, even others on the same last. Sometimes, I can reconfigure the lacing enough to not notice. But, from time-to-time it will rear its ugly head. It's a flaw, but I can work with it.

But, here's the biggest issue I have with the shoe, and I'm wondering if it's just me or if this kind of thing affects the rest of you. These mofos have a red lining. Now, the red lining looks cool and all, but here's the thing—it's tainting my sock supply. Seriously, the red rubs off onto any sock I wear, regardless of thickness. Any lighter colored sock I wear with it comes out with a pink hue at the end of the day, and it doesn't go away. If I wanted pink socks, I'd buy pink socks. Does anyone else have the problem with the lining staining their socks? Or, do I just have abnormally sweaty feet (possibly). Or, is there some trick to treating the lining to keep it from leaching on all my socks?

What other shoes come with that red lining? I'd like to know so I can avoid them in the future. I have to take the shoes off as soon as I get home and change out of the socks, or else the pink staining transfers itself to my hardwood floors if I walk around. I can't be the only one suffering from the Red Scourge, can I? If I am, feel free to make fun of me. Heck, feel free to make fun of me regardless.

Not the same, but my red Maritimes bled on my socks/feet when I first got them.

The only problem there is that my foot and the regular 65 lasted bals don't really get along. I have ok fit with the McTavish (runs big) and the Neumok (unlined so a little more room), but I couldn't get a Strand or McAllister to work. I am totally open to suggestions though!

It's "Throwback Thursday (C)" where we have a chance to show off AE styles of yore that have faded off into the discontinuation sunset. Today's shoe is the Stockbridge that was discontinued in Feb 2007. This split toe blucher is fully lined with a padded insole and rubber outer sole for comfort. The seams of the split toe and apron are exposed edges of the leather for a more casual look. The leather is "Gala silk calf," whatever that is. It was available in black, chili and merlot. There are new pairs on Ebay in the range of $150-190 but a good used pair is about $60-80. A great casual shoe.
