Revisiting an approximately year old conversation about the coupon(s) in the AE catalog... Anyone have a sense of how AEs decides who gets the $50 off? I didn't get one, but then again, $50 off msrp doesn't move the needle too much for me these days - especially with RDA in a couple of months and a possible spring trunk show.

I also didn't get the coupon. I've purchased quite a few pairs from AE over the past year, but almost all were shoebank seconds, with a few clearance firsts. Maybe they target the coupon at people who tend to purchase full-price firsts.

Yes, the Neumoks are Seconds and they lace kind of funny, but if you don't look down and keep walking while thinking of all the money you saved it doesn't really matter.

You 9EEE-wearing sonuvabitch! In Los Angeles too!

Thoughts on the pairing? I struggle most with deciding what to wear with natty and snuff suede colors.

And... yes, the panels are darker than the rest of the shoe. Hoping to slowly darken the caps with neatsfoot. It'll be patina/character before too long.

I don't know if this will count as an endorsement or not, but I would wear that combo. :slayer:

A pair of McGregors just popped up on the ShoeBank in my size. The SA at the outlet said that their flaw was tiger striping, but that they otherwise looked good and were one of the darker (as opposed to more greenish) pairs of bourbon shoes he's seen.

Our of curiosity, what would happen if you applied a couple of coats of brown polish to a tiger-striped bourbon shoe? For $137, is it worth a shot?

@middlepP I would personally look for more contrast, in order to avoid the footy pajamas look. But then again, I am guilty of the following much worse sin, committed twice out of sheer laziness:

I'm going to give my barnweaseliest advice here: buy first, ask questions later. Unless, of course, they're in my size. In which case, absolutely do not buy them.

Unfortunately, I don't know the answer to your question about polish. My Bourbon Fifth Aves have some slight tiger striping and I don't find it at all bothersome. I am just using the Bourbon polish and I like how they're coming along.

X-post. First time out with the new 3 mm black, flat laces. I think this is a nice change from the small burgundy laces that came with the shoes. In case you choose to get some, you should order the 75 cm length (29.5 inches). You can find them by clicking here

Warning: Spoiler! Non AE content, Shield eyes if necessary. (Click to show)

Neumoks hit the clearance section on the web site recently. I own a pair of McTavish, and they're absolutely my favorite shoe right now. They're hard to come by now.....so how much overlap do you think there is in the Neumok and McTavish? If anything, the Neumoks are a bit lighter than my McT's....

I haven't had any luck eliminating tiger striping. Lessening the contrast with dark brown, bourbon, or black polish is doable though. For me, it comes down to are they on both shoes or only one. I can live with light striping on both.

In my opinion, you need a boot next.  Considering the rest of your family, I might recommend an Oxblood Dalton.

BTW, for a small collection, that is a very nice spectrum of colors/styles.

Thanks. I was trying to cover as many of the colors as I could.

Thank you for the suggestions. It seems like the majority of votes are for a boot/chukka.  Shell Dundees (probably in color 8) would be a good way to kill two birds with one stone (shell, chukkas). However, I will probably have to wait until the next time the shell seconds go to $399 (or thereabouts) because no way I can do full retail price on those. What's left of my sensibilities just won't allow it.  For some reason, I love the looks of the Norwich in brown shell. That would be another two birds, one stone shoe (shell, monk strap).  I also love the looks of the Dundee in suede (loden maybe).  As for the Dalton (or dress boots in general), I'll have to go try some on in order to get comfortable with the concept. But the Oxblood Dalton is pretty.

And, of course, the suggestion to get a casual shoe is also a very good one.

Too bad I seem to have my heart set on the Club Monaco Leeds in tan suede.

Lexington is gone too.  This probably happened a while ago and I didn't notice.   I never saw the appeal of that shoe.  It's not casual enough and not dressy enough.

I guess Tex has been missing lately too. I miss seeing all the new shoes in real pictures.

I hope there wasn't a closet mishap and he's now lying helpless underneath a giant pile of AEs.

Yes this would explain why it was so quiet yesterday too!

In the coming week I'll be listing several pairs of shoes that don't fit or I just do not wear anymore. 2 Black PAs (10 D), 1 Oxblood PA (10 D), Bourbon Benton (9.5 D I believe) but it looks like walnut, Brooks Brothers Black 5th Aves (9 E). I'll have photos later this week for anyone that sends me a PM about a particular pair.
