It would really be nice if AE had a historical reference site with product pages for old/discontinued shoe styles - would make a lot of conversations on this site easier. I don't have great google-fu, but the Wayback Machine seems to struggle with how AE does their site, and (for example) I'd love to be able to click on "All 65-last shoes" and see every one ever made...
Don't beat yourself up on figuring your sizing.
Where did you buy them? Did you order them from AE or did you go to a retail store? If the latter, its worth a shot to bring them in and see if they'll take them back in exchange. Probably worth it to call AE even if you ordered them online. You have nothing to lose, and AE Customer Service is pretty damn good.
For any lurkers reading this, I feel it is seldom correct to size up in length on the 65 from your brannock. I'm sure they're are a few exceptions, but usually 1/2 down, or 1/2 down + up one width, is the best place to start if your actual brannock doesn't work.
I'd add for posterity that the Strand and its flat-welt cap-toe derivatives (e.g. Park Ave, Fifth Ave) are cut more tightly than the other bal-closure 5-last shoes (McAllister and its derivatives), at least for some of us, so you may not be able to jump from a McA to a Strand in the identical size, despite the fact they are on the same last.
