Question:
If you were "volunteered" to be the speaker at a 9/11 ceremony, what shoe would you wear?
(I'm thinking that the 1776 is the wrong answer.)

Patrick McManus, who wrote for Field & Stream, had a theory on how to bring new guns into the house. At a certain point, instead of your wife knowing that you have 6, or 8, or 10 guns, they just become "all those guns". When you get to that point, you can just bring them in anytime and not be noticed. He even had an expandable cabinet so there were always the same number of empty slots.

I think that same theory would be applicable for shoes as well!

Depends on how formal a ceremony it is, and if I'm just drawing on shoes I have or any AE style. If I was expected to wear a suit, I'd pull my black Carlyles, or a pair of black PAs. If it were shirt & trousers or khakis, my First Aves, or a pair of Leeds.

You and I wear the same size, maybe I could just borrow those Carlyles!

Hah, I would happily lend them to you, but they are D-width though so they'd probably be a bit loose. They were my first AEs, before I understood what my size actually was. I've only worn them once, to my sister's wedding.

Counter-question: If for some god-forsaken reason one attend a formal black tie event, would black Washington Squares be an acceptable way to spice one's ensemble up? Would they get complemented or eyerolled at?

Counter-counter question - did you ever read the review I wrote on here for the Brisbane?  I specifically said I tried it on so I could report back to Legolas' Dad.  You're welcome.

No I did not! Could you please direct me to it? I've been away for a while. Who's Legolas' dad?

Maybe if I hurry since they are still selling them?  But Navy isn't an option?

Has anyone seen the Washington Square?  My SM said the Walnut is very cool.

I would never wear the 1776 to an event like that. If you don't have anything in black, just go with something very dark.

Unfortunately, my Rutledges did not arrive today. I guess since they tried delivering it yesterday and left the delivery attempt notice, I will be getting it tomorrow. I was hoping to get it today to begin breaking them in, but I guess it will have to wait until Thursday...sigh.

The Washington Square would look great at a formal event. Personally, I'd place the Washington Square about a half-notch below the Carlyle and PA on the formality scale -- about even with the Fifth Avenue. Any of those four shoes would be fine for an interview, wedding, or formal event.

AE Ebay question - Does the Allen Edmonds ebay store actually list second quality shoes as such, or are all of the shoes listed all second quality?

This isn't the worst problem to have. She sounds like a keeper.

Learn from my mistake my friend: For some reason I found the need to describe to my wife how each shoe was slightly different. She had no clue until then. Ever since, she notices when new shoes pop up in the rotation

Don't do it. Reconsider. Read some lit-ature on the subject.
