Unrelated, but, man, it is a good thing that I wear an unusual size. I just skimmed the ShoeBank to see what pairs were available in my father's (far more common) size, and there was probably three times the selection. My wallet is thankful that my feet are so unusual.

You'd think that would be the case but call the store and ask. If not call Chris at the port washington store and have him get them for you and inspect them. I too agree with you. Standard sizes like 9d and 10d seem to have vastly greater selection of 2nds. If I could make 9D work on the 5 last....

@BespokeBrooklyn A pair of Lenexa just popped up in my size so I was having the same dilemma....not!

Today's wearing experience is far more pleasant than the previous 2 times.

Hmm, I don't have any Saphir, but I suppose I could try a little leather lotion. Either that or develop the expected heel callus.

Thanks for the idea!

Someone earlier mentioned problems with the Wide Basic belt. I have it in Walnut (way lighter than their Walnut shoes, matches Natural CXL), Brown, and Merlot. The Brown and Merlot seem fine, other than looking nearly identical. The Walnut is cracking bad though. I've only worn it probably 20 times. Is that a common problem with them?

Unfortunately, yes.  If you read reviews on the AE site, there's a ton of similar experiences.  I own one in black (fine), and one in merlot (cracking).

Have either of you contacted AE?  I'd be surprised if they didn't take care of that...

They're at the customer assistance center, so they've likely been returned. Of course, there are any number of reasons why they may haven been returned.

$137 is a good price, but with the additional 15% discount you can get if you order them through the Palo Alto store, they're $117, which, if they're decent, is a steal. Unfortunately, so far this year, I've already bought two pairs of new Allen Edmonds and acquired three pairs from eBay. While I would prefer chili MacGregors to some of the pairs I've already bought, a sixth pair would just be ridiculous, even for a committed barnweasel.

Six pairs would be ridiculous?
Have you forgotten where you are?

Zero to six pairs since March. Three first quality, three second quality with the last two pairs being McGregors. My wife is with you in the opinion that the sixth pair was ridiculous. Not sure I disagree. Does that qualify me for barn weasel status or at least a free psychiatric evaluation?

Thank you!  I'm hoping just looking at pictures will curb my need to have them in person.  I will let you know how that works out.  LOL.

Just wait til you pass the 20 pair threshold. That requires some major sole searching.

Barnweasel describes enablers, not the victims haha! Though in most cases one can be both things.

Actually I don't, with the exception of my natural cordovan dundees. But I'm not sure that counts.

I did have a walnut Rutledge and walnut Dalton, but I sold both. I find the color too flashy for dressy occasions for my personal style. However, my wife keeps pointing out walnut AEs to me when she sees them, telling me I need to get a pair for navy suits (ffffuuuu.gif)

I know, active encouragement? Go figure...

The first possible sign of being bitten by a filthy barnweasel can be a yellowing of the skin on the feet. A splitting of the toe can also be seen.

Believe it or not, these are the gold ones (7854S). They are definitely lighter yellow than in this picture, maybe more like my walnut Black Hills when I first bought those.

At first, I was a bit miffed to find this dry patch by the right eyelets:

But for $97 (minus a small balance on a leftover gift card) intended to be a pair of beaters, I may just hit it with leather lotion and see what happens.  Any other ideas?

I also find it hard to believe these are on the 511 last. They fit a little more like my Randolphs, a little tight near my pinkie toes. I thought I had more room in the Dundees I tried on.

This post was for @smfdoc, who kept posting his. Thank you sir.  I can't say I ever had my attention grabbed by NSTs (well, except for @peppercorn78's shell Bradleys, and that's not happening anytime soon), but they looked good in your posts!

I could understand why people might say that, especially if their only comparison was to crappy, cemented rubber-soled shoes.

Given my new Malones and my experience with trying some Dainite Dundees, I might have to agree somewhat.  After 2 years of fantastic, comfortable support in first the mini-lugged Black Hills, and leather soles for the rest, even good-quality rubber sole shoes feel a bit unsteady to me.  I dunno, maybe I have weak ankles. But I've clearly developed a change in preference.

YMMV, of course.
