Loafers with a suit?

I just purchased a really nice pair of loafers (Campanile) and although I don't usually wear loafers (with the exception of double monks) with a suit, I'm wondering if these are considered "dressy" enough to wear with a suit. Also, for those you who do wear your loafers with suits, what style loafer do you find works best? Pics are welcome!!!!

I wouldn't. I'd be tempted to, but I wouldn't.

I don't mind a tassel loafer with a suit but it's not my personal steeze. I like single monks with a suit, but it's technically not 100% kosher.

That's kind of what I anticipated the response would be but I was fairly certain I'd seen a few nice fits with loafers in the WAYWRN thread. Maybe I'm misremembering...

I’m not a fan of loafers with suits, but then I do tend to dress a bit more formally than most, so that’s partially just personal preference.

I find the look works best (and is closest to being ‘classic’) when it’s a summer outfit: a light (in color) cotton or linen suit, for example. Seersucker, too. In that context tassel loafers might be preferred by some, however. Think Martha's Vineyard in August.

Cheers,

Ac

Thanks AC, having spent some time in MV with my big brother over a few summers in my 20s, I can certainly picture the look you are referring too.

I may have to rethink this. Looking at these shoes, I can't really see myself wearing them with chinos or jeans but I do have more than my fair share of nice slacks/SC combos. So.....

Monk straps are not loafers (the picture is of penny loafers, which should never be worn with a suit).

Monk straps are entirely appropriate with suits. (The old-school etiquette in the English legal profession is only QCs wear monkstraps.)

Double monks are an abomination (but that is a personal stylistic opinion)!

If this falls within your style and it's fine in your work environment, the darker color and sleeker last should make it work in a suit.

I personally prefer balmorals with suits but I do wear loafers in the spring/summer time when I wear cotton/seersucker suits. I also sport them with odd jackets/trousers. However, I work in an environment where lab coats, scrubs, and Crocs dominate so dress codes aren't as rigid.

I don't always follow the style guidelines :)

Can anyone provide some picture examples of where they think loafers/tassel loafers do work well? I personally do quite like tassel loafers but am not sure how best to make them work with blazer and trouser combinations.

Someone asked for pics. This does not imply that I'm endorsing any of these looks, there just pictures I found related to the question.

Judging from these pictures, it does seem that tasseled or monk strap loafers would be a better choice. For what it's worth, I've always worn my Magnanni and Santoni double monks with suits. I consider double monks a more formal shoe than other types of loafers. Maybe I'm wrong about that as well...
