I should have also shown you the heel - he did two things to my specs that change from this design normally - you'll note I specified no braiding below the laces, the other is I specified this braiding on the heel (and no seam, though that one he didn't promise before making, since he expected he would not find a piece of cordovan that he could do that with).

While now it is done for just people who like it, I believe the original idea was to allow a person who finds bending difficult to still have the formality of a lace-up.

Another aspect, people with very high instep who still prefer the formality of oxford.
