Clubs, gay or straight, are lame 95% of the time. My favourite place to hang out is a restaurant 1 block away from my campus that is PACKED on the weekends. They have a great beer selection, good food, lots of nice girls, and a noise level that is conducive to conversation. Another bonus is that the wait staff do a good job making sure people don't get overly liquored up. I hate loud/obnoxious drunks. Here is their website. Gay bars in SF play the worst music. People tell you to go there because there are plenty of straight girls there and your chances of 'hooking up' increase but it just means there are a lot of ***-addicts and am jacky dudes trying to get with them because they know the girls will appreciate how open minded they are for being at a gay bar.
Just stay away from anything labeled 'Dike Night', for that is not as fun as it sounds.
