Probably because the waist is elastic and will stretch a few inches. That's my guess, at least.

I believe they are elastic (at least they were last year) so I imagine they measured unstretched.

Any idea on what the range is?

Someone on Grailed that had a pair claimed the M would fit 30-34. I was going to guess at least 3 inches extra myself.

Hello,

I apologize if this is the wrong place to post this, but I was wondering if I might be able to get some fit advice if possible? First time purchasing/trying on a Bedford Jacket (ripstop olive from SS '14), and just wanted to see general thoughts on if this is a good fit, or if I would be better suited with a size down, since I'm not sure what the "ideal" fit of EG attire should be. Randomly threw together some clothes to try on with it. I am wearing a size Small in the pictures, buttoned and unbuttoned. I typically wear XS, very occasionally Small, with jackets, am 5'7"-5'8", 135 lbs, with a 35 inch chest measured around and approximately 17 inches shoulder width. With the jacket, the shoulders fit comfortably well, but the chest has a fair bit amount of room to give. Would appreciate the help!

@ ricebomb - from the photos, the fit looks good to me, not big at all, although I understand the actual fit maybe bigger than what the photos appear to be.

I'm more or less the same physique as you & wear S in Bedford as well.

Looks good to me @ricebomb

Yeah, sleeves might be too short if you size down

Anyone know how the previous Chester coats fit? More specifically the Freak Store collab if there's any variance in sizing between them.

@Dino19 @ChetB @RuffyD Thanks for the responses! I'm so used to wearing clothes tighter and closer fitting to my thinner body, that wearing something looser that affords a bit more room than usual such as with this Bedford is definitely a different feel for me.

@ricebomb The Bedford fits you very well. I remember when I tried on my first EG piece and the first couple of jackets. I thought that everything fit like shit ... Now my closet is 90% EG ...
