No offense to anyone here, but the LHS in standard color 8 imho, is a far nicer choice than either the color 2 or ruby shell options. Sometimes we get a little carried away by scarcity. But, I've always said, to each his own...

Alden snuff Roys just back from restoration. The uppers have always been in decent shape with some indigo transfer plus a few scuffs, but Alden cleaned them up a bit. Before pic is first then one from today in direct sun, they're not as yellow in real life. Overall really pleased. Turn around time was about as quoted.

The classic colors are classic for good reason.

imagine if alden decides to discontinue color 8. it would be even more rare then the color 2, 4, ravello and cigar is today.

I'd check out Grant Stone.  I've had the JCrew Kenton boots, and they are fine for the money, but Grant Stone is built to an entirely different level.  I got smacked with a huge bill on home repairs, so I got a pair of their NST boots (instead of the pair from AoM that recently arrived) and they are truly outstanding.  The last actually is even better for me than Barrie (which is saying something).  A more casual design execution than Alden, so a bit less versatile, but the leather and build are flawless (and I'm picky).

Out of respect for the thread I'll allow y'all to explore on your own.

Would you recommend a suede LHS, or a chunkier penny loafer (perhaps a beef roll) made out of a more rugged leather?

Although you can't go wrong with a suede LHS, I would highly recommend a color 8 loafer (LHS or Tassel).

These are the snuff suede Kentons:

Not bad for $75.

The shoes far right in the picture I posted earlier are Plain Toe snuff J.Crew Kentons, not Aldens. Also got them for $75 bucks :)

I really like them, but have blown through the soft foam soles very quickly (one year)...I know they are rebuild-able but having a hard time justifying $130 resole on a pair of boots I got for $75 bucks.

I'm new around these parts, mainly just lurking but here are my color 8 WTB with a chili edge done by yours truly. I'm quite active on Reddit but wanted to join the SF party as well.

I generally don't really care for the Color #2 and the Color #4 leather for most uses as it just seems so bright but I think the one exception, where those bright colors work exceptionally well, is the LHS.
