A question for some of the shell experts: What is the difference in Alt Wein and #8? I have seen many of the different numbers, various names like whiskey, green, blue, natural and even gun metal, but I can't find a description of alt wein or how it differs from #8.

Alt Wien refers to the style of the shoe, not the color.

Here's an example below of Alt Wien in color #8 -

That certainly helps clear up the issue for me. Thank you. Now, I just have to find a pair in my size.

Random question but does anywhere wear these sockless or only the unlined ones from BB?

Our recent group order with the color 8 plaza NST monkstrap went very well and was submitted a couple of weeks ago. I'd like to gauge the interest on a (old) new idea for the next group order.

The unlined suede chukka is one of the quintessential Alden shoes, unfortunately as many of us know or have experienced, the Leydon last is quite narrow and hard to fit. Personally I'm unable to be fitted in the Leydon due to lack of EE lasts. I'd like to propose the following design, this has been done before by Leathersoul in a lined version. I think the plaza last would be excellent as a chukka and will be comparable, if not better than, the Leydon last.

We'd need 12 people to commit and this order will go through. Here are the details and a photo of lined plaza suede chukka from Leathersoul.

Material: Snuff suede
Last: Plaza
Lining: Unlined
Welt: Flat, 270 degree with closed heel
Edge: Natural
Sole: Waterlok

Please PM if you are interested!

As you can see, even the new #8 level of darkness fades quite a bit in sunlight. I think these look just sooo much better (even if the inconsistent coloring isn't everyone's favorite).

They have since sold. Anyway, a great example of some signature Alden shell cordovans from the 1950s, when, "[...]Morris Bootmakers were carrying over 20 variations in color and leather." I think the help at Alden might have misspoke. Either way comfortable boot.

My 1st Aldens! Been reading some posts/threads on the Need Supply Indys and seems I could have done better for my 1st pair... But still happy with the purchase. They are very light (most likely because of the soles).

I was drinking water and some droplets landed on the show and became dark spots but quickly dried after a while. Any advice on how to take care of the leather?

Natty CXL Indys were also my first Alden, and I think you made a great choice - super-versatile, classic and easy to maintain.

Mainly care is just brushing. I brush a little before I wear my shoes/boots and a fair bit after (meaning a minute or so). With the Indys, every once in a while I'll brush 'em, run a damp cloth over them and brush them for a few minutes each. Mine are a year old, and I've put the Alden boot cream on them twice. The second time they probably didn't need it, and I'm not planning to do it again any time soon.

The welt will darken (and in my case redden a bit) and the leather will deepen. I love my Indys

Gentlemen, great shoes across the board here! Sorry, been on travel and stuff, so been exceptionally busy, but a great showing of Aldens here.

Those super vintage Wingtips were pretty cool, like how people are using the historical references... :-) I haven't looked at the history page in many moons.

@arrow, I got one of those NST Chukkas coming, I had Yenni hold it back a few days due to not being home, but now I am looking forward to seeing them!

This is correct, but wanted to offer the additional tid bit that Alt Wien is a term that I believe is used exclusively by Epaulet to describe this pattern. Alden of Carmel just got a boot in in Color #8 (albiet on the Aberdeen and probably a few other materials) and TheShoeMart did this pattern (albiet on Plaza) in Color #8 and Black Shell this past winter and may still have some remaining.

But Color #8 is the color of Shell Cordovan that refers to what most people would call Burgundy. It is a nice and rich color that lightens and patinas nicely over time. In fact Color #8 has somewhat become synomous with Shell Cordovan in many aspects is the most popular color tanned by Horween today. Cordovan is now a Color that is similar to Burgundy and this can get confusing if you buy a Cordovan color shoe not made out of Shell Cordovan... Just thought that I would add this tidbit in for fun.

Yenni's tobacco makeup is a flat welt, I believe. Not sure if the latest run closed yet, but it seems like a regular hit now.

I was looking at the first post in this thread and was wondering, is a boot with a Trubalance last bigger/wider than a Barrie last of the same size?

I have a #8 shell blucher on the Barrie and it is comfortable but with no room to spare. I was looking at the Navy Chamois Indy boot and was wondering if I could make it in the same size as my Barrie blucher.

Thanks!

To myself, yes it is, say I take 7.5D Barrie with some heel slip (hardly any C width here), 7.5D TruBalance Indy will have slightly wider toe box, and fuller heel, but that's mitigated by the boot design and you won't slip that much, and I have to lace tightly.

What is mocc stitch on an Indy boot? I know about machine and hand stitching.

Thanks.

I'm an 11.5 narrow side of D and I took a 10.5 Barrie shell Blucher.

Folks here said that a boot on the Barrie last is snugger than the same size of a shoe. Therefore, I'd go for an 11 Barrie boot but Trubalance appears to be a bit wider at the forefoot. And maybe the heel.

Could work.

Or try 10.5 Indy.

I have similar feet to you - 9C/8.5D on left/right, whereas 9C on left is more narrow side of D, with a narrow heel.

I've tried 7D Indy, no luck; 8D Barrie Wingtip Boot, seems fine; 8D Indy, need to lace tightly, so I would assume 7.5D or 8C Indy for myself but local dealer don't have it.

That is what I was thinking.

From posters here I take it that shell Barrie boots fit slimmer than same the size shell Barrie shoes.

But going with Trubalance Indy's,and in chamois, I'd hopefully be fine with the same size as my Barrie blucher size.

You should be fine. The Trubalance will have more overall volume than the Barrie, but not enough to size down, especially if the barrie blucher is "comfortable but with no room to spare".  Where are you getting the chamois indy's from?

Mocc stitching is referring to the stitch that goes from the lace stays across the vamp. Essentially it's the two lines of stitching that runs in a U shape across the toe. It is my understanding that it provides minimal to no structural integrity to the shoe but is mainly for aesthetics. The mocc stitch can be done either by hand or machine. Alden essentially only does hand stitching on Shell because the owner of Alden prefers that styling. Hand stitching can be requested by the vendor at time of purchase if they desire it over machine stitching on non-Shell materials, however it does impact price and time to make.
