I was recently talking with a salesman at TSM and I was told that there is a serious lack of shell hides without defects(dark spots, scars etc) Therefore the lighter shades of shell are very rare. That most likely explains why all the color 8,cigar,whiskey have been so dark. I believe it's to hide imperfections and blemishes.

Other manufacturers don't seem to have as much issue with availability. I've seen several runs of light shell shades recently, including natural and whiskey, from Rider, Viberg, and others.

Hi All,

I'm mostly a lurker and love seeing all the great Alden love and tips on general care. I'm looking for some advice. I read the opening post, but there's a lot to digest and I'm looking for the best possible direction to go for my specific situation.

I've come to the point where I'm able to afford one pair of cordovan shoes or boots. I want them to be brown and although Color #8 looks fantastic, it just wouldn't work with my wardrobe. I just celebrated the birth of mydaughter by purchasing a Nomos Tangente watch that has a wonderful brown Horween cordovan strap (they use Horween even though they're a German company) and I've had an AE brown cordovan belt for a couple of years.

I'm currently very tempted to order a pair of Allen Edmonds Dundees in brown cordovan. I know it would match my belt and be much closer to my watch strap than color 8. However, I have a pair of Indy boots and Alden Suede PTBs and there is something these boots and shoes have that my AE Park Avenues don't. It could be the fuller last, it could be a more classic cut, it could be that Alden isn't owned by a huge Private Equity firm, I don't know.

Long story short, I want to buy a pair of Cigar Shell shoes or boots on the Barrie last. My order of preference would be LWB, Chukka, PTB or some kind of ankle boot. How would I make this happen? I don't mind waiting if I"m ultimately going to end up with some footwear that I'll cherish in a way that I could never do for the Dundees.

This has been a somewhat unanswered question for a while now. Those makers you mention do tiny runs in those exotic shades, but so does Alden when they do get around to fulfilling orders. No one would question Alden has 10x the demand for exotic shell as those other makers, but still, it is an unknown why other makers- in similar quantities- do not have the same trouble. We are also seeing more runs specific for the Asian market than I can recall (though with as well informed as many here are, I doubt this board doesn't know about most every one).

I mulled the Cigar dover I got from Harrison over the weekend and have decided to return... they are not the darkest shade I've ever seen but pretty close.

For the LWB, call Alden of DC and see if they are doing any runs soon, and if so add your name to their list. I don't know who is doing chukka/ptb in that color...

Cigar chukka via Alden of SF.

Very nice shade!

You've reminded me I need to wear mine more often.

TheShoeMart, and Alden Shop of SF/DC offer Cigar LWB, chukka and PTB on a fairly regular basis.   Call them and check, if not in stock, have your name on their waiting list.   Alden of Carmel also offers the Cigar LWB regularly.

I think you should also consider Ravello.   Cigar could be real dark, depending on the particular batch of hide and stain used.

I think this has been debated several times over the years

1) Other makers are ordering many fewer shoes. Viberg may order 24 shoes in a rare color, and maybe a few more other cordovan runs every year. Same with Rider. Alden may order 100-200 pairs of whiskey and spreads them across the globe (very rough numbers)

2) Alden's priority with Horween has been sourcing color 8 and black historically, so they probably make sure they have those first. Other makers may focus on other colors. For example, Crockett and Jones / Ralph Lauren seem to be allocated a ton of "brown" cordovan by Horween annually, I would guess more RL/C&J brown cordovan models sell annually than Alden's Cigar), so they may get higher priority for "brown" shells

A big thank you to @JS01 who recommended Kathy at Alden DC and everyone else for their help on determining my size. I am a US 10.5 B on brannock but have been wearing US 9.5 D on most RTW shoes. After Speaking to Kathy, I decided to order the Cordovan Color 8 wingtip blucher in sizes 10 C  and 9.5 C and another barrie shoe in size 10 B. I also ordered the Cordovan Grant boot in size 9.5 D since Kathy did not have a 10 C.

With regards to the barrie last, size 10 C was obviously big. 10 B is tight in the vamp area. 9.5 C is a perfect fit. On the Grant last, 9.5 D is short with my left foot toes pressing against the leather.

I will now go ahead with a MTO cordovan boot, either the Grant captoe in size 10 C or a Barrie boot in size 9.5 C? Does the 10 C size sounds right for the Grant last captoe since it does not come in B width? If I go with the Barrie last, any recommendations for the boot makeup? I want something different than the barrie wingtip blucher that I will be keeping.

Thank you everyone again for your help. I am really happy to finally lock down my size on one last of Alden.

But do those other manufacturers source from Horween?

Yes, they do.
