Kudos to Alden DC.  I was in town for a few days on a roadtrip vacation with the family, bought these at the store Thursday afternoon electing to have them shipped to avoid the sales tax, and arrived home in NJ earlier today to find them waiting for me.

double leather is ok for dry land and occasional moisture. wouldn't choose any leather sole to go in wet conditions really. commando is the tits when it comes to bad weather. my only complaint is that Alden commando wears down relatively fast compared to other rubber soles.

I have my first commando soles on order. Can you give me some idea of what relatively fast means?

What is relatively fast? Sorry, browser problems caused duplicate post.

relative to my dainite soles. I find the dainite soles are more hard wearing, but the commandos are softer/comfier and have better traction. also, the british commando soles are so stoutly that I doubt you would ever need a resole.

Does Alden use the British commando sole?

Alden's commando sole is their own special design. The midsole section is leather, which may not be ideal.

Dainite is very hard wearing, but it can be slippery when new before the sole is made rough through wear. I really wish Alden used Dainite...

I can't stand Dainite.  I have no idea why they are so popular.  Jarring, hard plastic with strange grip for me.  I won't buy another pair with them.

Medway and Ridgeway soles are nice.

Following on Mike's incredible Ravello monkstraps. I have been jonesing for AoM's #8 wingtip model. In Aberdeen tie shoes i wear a 9.5; in Aberdeen slip ons I wear a 9. What size should I choose for monkstraps? In other words, is the strap as snug as laces?

I'd definitely have those looked at by a skilled cobbler - send 'em to BNelson or AH One if you don't have one in your area. My $0.02.

But many of my newer (last 2-3 years) boots have hooks that are looser and swivel a bit. Not sure if the tolerances are sloppier or if Alden is less inclined to crimp them on so tightly to prevent possible tear-through. Just my observations from a small sample size, and please keep in mind I know very little about shoe construction.

Thanks for your thoughts gentlemen.
I will have them checked out by my cobbler next week.
I wonder when this appeared to be a problem because I never really checked the speedhooks in detail. I own those Shoes For 4 years, but i actually did never laced them that tight -also the tongue is attatched to the shoe so Never had any issues with that -, maybe thats my luck otherwise i'd lost one or the Other speedhook by now😁

For me monkstraps are proving to be tricky.  If you have a high instep, I'd really recommend finding your way to a store that has a range of sizing (Alden SF, Alden DC, AoM) and trying some one.  I'll let others give you more informed opinions on sizing, but I think the general guidance is they fit TTS.

Anyone interested in taking over my pre-orer for the Alden x Epaulet Color 8 Wingip Boots on the Plaza last + commando soles + antique edges? It's in size 12D. I recently found out that for Plaza I need to go with size 11D. Here's the related listing: http://www.styleforum.net/t/526040/drop-pre-order-alden-for-epaulet-to-tie-color-8-sw-boots-12d

Help me out if you can. And thanks! :-)
