So, here's a question. A lot of people have over the past year discussed the old Alden #8 to the new (darker) #8, but mostly with initial color in mind. How have people felt about it's patina over time? I'm contemplating buying a pair of #8 PT boots from Adam at AoC, and I feel like my darker #8 haven't patina'd at all. They've stayed super dark. About 8 months with one pair, and 4-5 months with another.

Anyone find that with a bit more time their super dark #8 has gotten lighter and that beautiful #8 patina? Or are your new #8 shoes staying dark permanently, and not fading at all?

I think the care methodology has a lot to do with whether how permanent the Alden eggplant dye is. (along with wear frequency)

If you are one to use reno often, then the colors will fade more than if you just use a damp cloth wipe down and then brush.

There are quite a few other variables, such as how you wear your shoes, etc.

my $0.02.

Color 8 "patina" takes time - like years. The purple slowly becomes a rich brown.

I guess more specifically, my older Alden color #8, and non-Alden dyed (Rancourt and AE) #8 shoes have shown immediate potential to patina. Obviously patina is a long-term process. On the creases, or within a few weeks some blemishes start showing through. With the new #8, even the creases are just as dark as the rest of the shoe. None of the brilliant bright highlight lines that used to be the mark of a freshly creased pair of #8 shell.

It sort of makes me wonder whether Alden hasn't rejiggered their dye specifically to make #8 shell not fade anymore.

Need to break out some more shoes and maybe should have brought the Leffot Tankers out of the box for todays forecasted rain, but stuck with the Indys that were easily accessible this morning.

Tough to say but I think the darker finish would just take more time to wear off and change color. I would be curious to see the new dark color 8 out in the sun for a few weeks and how the finish reacts.

The foster cat just sneaked out to act as dust bag stand lol
Photo taken by fiancée so... Female's take lol

It's Unlined Hunting Green Suede Chukka, as her size is same to mine (US8) and she needs a rugged, long lasting and causal shoe, I picked them to replace her worn Clarks desert.

Good job getting the wife in on the Aldens. I bet she wears them well. Sounds like a good a pair for the lady. Which last are they?

They do look like Leydon but dealer said it's Barrie.

Let's place a bet on how long she will wear out the waterloc sole - she will mostly beat it with daily wear

Interesting....could be a very good tactical move in a broader campaign for collection acceptance.

I found a pair of black shell full straps out thrift hunting last weekend at a spot that's panned out before. Size 7 which fit my gf. So she now has some she'll Aldens of her own.

Talk are lucky. My wife's feet are so small, she wears a US women's size 4 extra narrow. Not possible to find any men's welted footwear for her! Otherwise, I'd have made strategic purchases for her long ago.

I tried my luck actually - I'm in 9C/8.5D with skinny feet so I have to take 8D or even 7.5D; she's UK7/US9/EUR40 with thicker feet and higher instep, so 8D also works.

I was planned to take over the pair if it won't fits. Now maybe I shall get one too.
