I'd keep those. Aren't whiskey PTBs notoriously difficult to get perfect as the lighter shades are harder to hide imperfections in the shell? That said, if you can find firsts(who's actually running them?) for $100, that's not a bad option other in the chance that they're better.

Where and when.  I would keep.

Keep.

You'd have better luck striking the lottery than finding whiskey firsts let alone firsts that look better than those seconds.

1000% keep them.

Ah the old janitor shoe! I'd say all things considering that whiskey shade looks pretty darn good, for Alden. I would keep them if I liked that particular styling. Great fortune for you!

New 8 LWBs, Antique, Commando

Other than Indys, are these the quintessential Alden shoe?

Exactly my thoughts before I got the Alden bug. Utilitarian opinion: They look good; they are most comfortable.

My whiskey NST boots from the seconds list come tomorrow. I only hope that the "flaw" is some minor speckles on the leather...

No offense, but while this is a beautiful shoe and one I would love to own, I would hardly call it quintessential Alden with the antique edge/welt and commando.  The standard 975 is pretty close to being quintessential Alden, but I would probably place the color 8 tassel mocs at the top of the list since Alden invented the model back in the 1940s.  The 403s would be right there at the top of the list also.

I agree w rtp, standard 975 is more of a quintessential Alden than the antique edge version.
975 was my first pair and the perfect gateway for me when I got started. #8 tassels may be even more iconic, but were too "old looking" for me at the time.
