Hi all,

I'm looking to get a pair of #8 alden cordovan straight tip boots in the barrie last from Alden of SF. I'm a 7E on the brannock with a high arch and instep.

Firstly, if the Barrie last good for people with a high instep?

Secondly, I've seen most recommendations to be half a size down so 6.5E, but there was this guy on askandyaboutclothes that recommended TTS and one width down, so 7D for me. He said that this would reduce heel slip but I'm not 100% sure.

Thirdly, is the grant last suitable for a person with a high instep?

Thanks,

X

The barrie last is overall very forgiving, but I don't know how good it is for somebody with a high arch and instep. I have the boots that you're interested in that the fit me fine, but I have a low arch an average instep. Assuming the instep is not an issue for you, I would suggest a 6.5D.

Question for you guys who have dealt with this in the past.. My recent Leffot Tankers (2015 run) have an incredibly irritating squeak every time that I wear them, and it just seems to be the tongue rubbing up against the eyestay inner lining. I've tried to clean, condition the tongue and eyestays and to no avail they just won't stop. Any simple fixes for this? I'd love to wear them more but I won't cause the sound drives me nuts for a shoe this expensive. I've tried googling for an answer but theres really nothing very concrete. Tempted to contact Alden to see if they'd even refinish them.

Ok, I read about that with shoes and putting it under an insole, but in this case, applying it to the lining/tongue? Just want to clarify, thank you!

Just picked these up from another member. 5th pair of Aldens in 5 months (another on pre-order for March). Now I just need to somehow find some ravello and black to complete the shell rainbow.

Well, the logic there is pretty straight forward! ;-)

Good to another fellow B width. It's worth the hassle to get the perfect fit though!

I think the Barrie is a pretty good fit for a high instep.

I'm a 9E on the brannock with an average/low arch and high instep. I size the Barrie in 8.5E. 9D also fits pretty well.

IME the Grant last can work for those with a high instep but you may find yourself right on the bubble. Just a touch snugger across the instep than the equivalent Barrie size.

I have the same problem on my grant last WT boots from B+M, the squeak is quite loud in the beginning, it becomes much better after some wears but still some minor squeak now. Will try to use some talc on the tongue to see if it sloves the problem. Thanks!!

Mdubs,

I saw your makeup of the Medallion captoe boot #3939 on your blog. It's amazing! It is definitely my favorite black shell boot and I think you did a phenomenal job.  TSM is out of my size currently, do you know if it was just a one time thing with you an Ed to do a makeup or will he run it again?  Thanks.

P.S. I just got confirmed for my whiskey antique edge LWB...can't wait!

Congrats on your new LWBs!!! Those will be superb!

They are already organizing a second run of the Plaza Boots. Just give Ed a holler. Plan to wear my Black pair soon! :-) Alternatively, Adam from AoC is doing a similar makeup, you can check out his site as well.

My 2 cents...

The Barrie 1/2 size down works great for me & I have a low instep.  Grant last boots are not the best fit for me.  I find they have to much volume in the waist or instep

when I go TTS, sizing down 1/2 results in a cramped toe-box.  I would assume the grant would work well with a higher instep.

Good luck!
