My entry

I just got back from a quick trip to Chicago to meet with some vendors, and had a chance to check out Horween during my visit. Phil Kalas of Horween (and Ashland Leather) has been an all star vendor at Massdrop since the beginning, and he was kind enough to give me a tour. I'm going to launch a drop with with his wallets in some rare shell colors (as well as some classics and CXL) tomorrow, so in anticipation of that I thought I'd share a photo or two from my trip.

First, these 1000 butts (lol)

The shells sit in huge piles like this in their final stage of tanning, soaking in a blend of oils that has been brushed on. They usually sit like this for at least 3 months - I'm told that, like many things, the longer they marinate the better the final product.

Please tell me some in gunmetal?  That'd be sweet!

Is Phili with Horween now? I didn't realize that he worked there too.

He's actually worked there for about a decade, doing operations. That's why Ashland always has such great leathers :)

I don't see gunmetal unfortunately, but I do count 6 colors of shell so that's a pretty good spread!

Here's something I found really interesting: here's the same #8 shell piece, the only difference in the two images is that it was rotated 180 degrees. The difference in apparent color is amazing - no wonder this stuff is so hard to photograph accurately! I believe the difference comes from the direction of the grain, sort of like how suede can look different depending on the angle.

Took receipt of my @Deusis Guarded Goods Horween #8 Shell Cordovan lanyard. Pictured next to my natural vegetable tan lanyard from SF member @zissou in 2012.

Great comparison @Churchill W , thanks! That was a fun project, and hopefully not the last from our good friend @Deusis

More Horween shell up on the site now, for those interested: massdrop.com/buy/ashland-leather-louis-little-new-york-wallet

Committed to Little Louis in Natural Shell at lowest price point. Already have a Little Louis in #8.

That's some great aging on that key chain, @Churchill W! I'll be in Chicago in May, and will be looking forward to picking up some shells from Horween.

Glad to find this thread. Massdrop has been my go-to source for Saphir and Japanese games smile.gif

Quick heads up - next week we'll be launching another run of MTO ties from Ed at Panta. These are going to be offered in a handful of colors in a beautiful cotton-silk fabric that he's used in the past. More details to come!

A. Damnit, not sure how I missed the contest! Not that I stood a ghost of a chance but I'm cheap enough to convince myself that I might.
B. I already own the blue and green and like them. Someone (ahem) snagged the beige from Ed just before me Ed offered them on sale on B&S or I'd have that too. Looking forward to grabbing it. Hope there will be a brown? Or other offerings?
