Only 3 Of Each...

If you were starting to build a bar and wanted to pick 3 750 ML bottles of booze from each category, which would you pick? My experience in alcohol is limited, and I'm afraid I know more of what I wouldn't. For sure, I'd pick Lagavulin 16 year for my scotch whiskey category. Maker's Mark is good, though it's the only bourbon I've tried. Anyway the categories: Bourbon 1) 2) 3)\t Brandy\t 1) 2) 3)\t Gin 1) 2) 3)\t Rum 1) 2) 3)\t \t Scotch\t 1) 2) 3)\t Tequila 1) 2) 3)\t \t Vodka 1) 2) 3) Does anyone here know a lot about Rye Whiskey?

Do you mean realistically, or if money was no object?

Well, if it's worth the money, it's worth it. Otherwise keep it somewhat realistic. Preferably stuff you've actually tried.

If by rye whiskey, you mean "Canadian" here is what I'd suggest

Wisers Special Old
Alberta Springs

Then either a bottle of Crown Royal or Canadian Club, because people expect it, not because they are good.

Scotch

Money no object and if you can find a a bottle - Glen Rothes 1973 (27 year old, sold out)
Blend - Chivas 18
Affordable Single - Oban 14

Don't really drink any of the other hard liquors, so can't comment.

I certainly haven't been drinking enough or for a long enough time to try all the good stuff out there, but here is my small contribution:

rum:
appleton's

gin:
bombay sapphire
tanqueray

vodka:
stoli (chilled)

Gin: Bombay Sapphire, Tanqueray, and Hendrick's Vodka: Grey Goose, Chopin, Absolut/Sky

Why do you need three bottles of each unless you are opening a real bar? For gin, I would buy Hendrick's or Plymouth. For bourbon, I would buy Woodforde Reserve. For scotch, I would buy Macallan (18, if I had the funds). I would buy as cheap a rum and vodka as possible; no one can taste the difference when it's mixed with soda or fruit juice. And if anyone asked me for brandy or tequila, I would tell him to take a hike.

For gin and tonics, I really like Rangpour, which is Tanquaray lime infused gin.

I wouldn't... but I'd try 3 different kinds and I'd pick a favorite

Home bar or commercial bar?

Are you looking at "What's your favorite liquors in each category?" or "What top/mid/well grade liquors would you choose for each category?"?

A decent home bar to share with friends. The good stuff I'll keep stashed in the closet.

Basically, I'm trying to get opinions from people so I can buy a bunch, taste them, and pick my favorites. A starting point of sorts...

Shitty rum makes for shitty drinks, IMO, just like any other alcohol.

Rums:
1. Cruzan Light
2. Sailor Jerry's
3. Pampero Anniversario
