Topcoats and Overcoats

I know that traditionally, a topcoat should end at the knee or just below and an overcoat should end at mid calf.  However, when I look at the current selection at Brooks Brothers, Jos A Bank, Nordstrom's, etc., it seems that almost all of the topcoats end at mid thigh and the very few overcoats that they advertise end just above the knee.  Have outerwear styles just gone shorter?

I'm looking to make a purchase in the next week or two.  I live in NJ, so while the winters perhaps are not brutal, it definitely gets quite cold and we get a fair amount of snow.  Thanks for any advice.

Unfortunately the current fashion/trend now is short coat length. Look at O'Connell's for more traditional coats in traditional full length.

Thanks.  I just looked at their website, and it seems that most of their coats are in the $1200-$1600 range, which is a bit more than I wanted to spend.  Is there nothing available out there between the $250 junk at JAB and MW and the >$1000 range?
