No, Ascot Chang is in Shangri-La Manila. This is the hotel beside Shangri-La Mall. I can't remember the name, but its the only tailoring place there.

Why shouldn't I get MTM suits there? Labor is cheap and is always in demand.
I remember staying at the Shangri-la hotel Makati and visiting the mall too. Im guessing there are two Shangri-la hotels, Makati and Manila?

Shangri-La Manila is the one in Makati. Shangri-La Plaza is the one in Mandaluyong, beside the Shangri-La Mall.

Let's put it this way- I was talking to a cutter in Ascot Chang in Hong Kong early last year, and we were talking about the AC store in Manila, and he told me don't bother going there.

Believe me, the last thing you'd want to have made here is a suit.

Philippines can't be that bad can it?

Is there anyone here that makes a decent fused suit in 100% wool. I dont care if its from one of the fancy Italian or English Mills, so long as it is nice wool.

I don't know, man.... people come here for the awesome beaches, the dive sites and stuff like that. I haven't heard of anyone coming here, in a tropical country where its unusual to wear a suit to work, to get some made.

Not that I know of, and I looked around. Better get a nice otr on sale from there and have a decent tailor fix it for you... that'll save you more.

Neyus,

Going by SF standards, I think you should get a more expensive but satisfying suit from say Herringbone, than buying one here.... Yeah, the Philippines imo can't deliver sartorially but there are more stuff to do here, you won't miss that part.

Okay, I've been in Manila since Tuesday night. Decided to check out the local shops and tailors for myself to see what the deal was. Went to Bergamo and King Philip. I liked looking at the fabrics at King Philip there looked like there would be some promising finds, particularly with the cashmere/wool blends, unfortunately they were all really course. Even if I could find some acceptable fabric which I am sure I could do, the suits are just so poorly executed. I think for the money I could definitely spend it at a fairly mediocre tailor in Hong Kong and come out on top. Went to Bergamo, the clothes they were using were alot nicer and the price was probably only slightly more than King Philip unfortunately the finishing was not there. In the examples I saw, they didn't even cut a buttonhole into the lapels. The buttonholes throughout the coat were however nicely sewn but as hard as I tried to like them I couldn't. Maybe if they charged half of what they did I would be tempted but unfortunately they don't. Its unfortunate because Bergamo do have some okay cloth but it isn't helped by their subpar construction.

I did find a few surprises interestingly enough at Rustans. I forget the label, but they had a nice pair of shoes, in a balmoral wingtip, looks as though it was blake stitched. There was also a couple of trad looking Florsheims. They were big gunboats and goodyear welted. (I think it was a Kenmoor) One of them had a storm welt. There was another brand that I would probably give a second look at and that would be Bristol. They had a couple of models that were quite handsome on a rather elegant last, unfortunately they were black. What is it with all the black shoes there, I had the same problem in Hong Kong. Actually this pair of shoes at Rustans' were similarly priced to the Bristols at shoemart and look to be slightly better quality.

Another suprise at Rustans': Perry Ellis suits. Half Canvassed, pick stitching, ticket pocket in fairly nice super 150 cloth. I looked up on the net for further info and looks like that the Perry Ellis stuff available in The US is all garbage synthetic crap. These suits at Rustans were Chinese albeit quite nice and probably most reasonably priced I saw particularly for the quality. They werent Zegna, but only slightly below from what I could see although the shoulder blade seam wasn't sitting as nice as the forementioned.

I have a pair of captoe balmorals from Bristol that I like very much and wore to my wedding. They have a few models that would be SF-approved, and a whole lot of tacky models as well. The workmanship looks pretty good -- clean stitching and details, etc. The leather probably isn't the best, but what do you expect for 2000 pesos?

I met a tailor who used to work in the US that's come home to Manila. He's made me three shirts (one from Cone Mills chambray, two from Italy and Japan mill oxford), and a pair of jeans for my wife (Cone Mills denim). He found a local guy who can make shoes, and is working on getting quality leather shipped here for some of his projects.

When I studied in the Philippines, yes, I did studied there. I was amazed that some of their liturgical vestments is so good. Some is better than eupore, IMO.
Yes, the other stuff to be Mango, and now is the season! I think Philippines mango is the best beside Okinawa mango. But much much cheaper.

Yeah, foreigners go nuts over our mangoes. I don't know why. But then again I've never tried mangoes from anywhere else.

Dress slacks for $60-80 in decent wool.
