College Freshman looking into Colognes

Alright I've never used colognes/perfumes before this age (17). I've always showered two or three times a day and just relied on the occasional usage of deodorant (thankfully never Axe spray)

But I've decided to start using. I went into Macy's and JCPenny's to look at a few. I tried a few Acqua di Gio (obviously...) but it's too common and I wasn't too pleased with it. However I've tried a few others ranging from Hugo Boss (sorry for the ambiguous nature of the post, I'm new to all this) to Burberry.

I was really pleased with Burberry... has this woody smell with a kick.

Ultimately I'd like to purchase two. One for daytime and one for nighttime. What else should I look into? And also keep in mind that it will be for winter/upcoming spring time...

Hopefully something accessible. Nothing too exotic. Yet nothing too common either.

I'm not too knowledgable about fragrances either, but I've been into Sephora a few times, they've got a pretty wide selection, with some stuff I haven't seen in Macy's or other department stores... Once you get past being over stimulated in that store you might find something you actually like.

Hmm well at the moment I don't feel like driving too far. So I think I will stick to the two department stores that are five minutes away. Macy's and JCPenny. There are larger department stores like Nordstrom 35 minutes away, but I probably won't be going for a few weeks.

Thierry Mugler and YSL are probably the two dept store brands that are most consistently recommended online. Try all of their stuff you can find, then maybe you'll have a better idea what your personal taste is? (And by try I mean wear for a full day, of course.)

Sephora just came out with a sampler pack you could try out for 50 bucks. And it comes with a gift certificate for one full size bottle when/if you find one that suits you.

Chanel d'homme (sport) is pretty good one for neophytes.

Yeah, the Burberry fragrances are pretty nice, I've owned Touch on a few occasions in the past and it's been complimented more than any other fragrance I've owned. For lighter daytime stuff try Davidoff, Joop or Paul Smith. Checked out some stuff while I was out shopping for Christmas and the Marc Jacobs fragrance really impressed me... shame it was only selling in massive £40 vats of the stuff.

Would you say that Burberry fragrances are more daytime or nighttime?

MMMM Just bought that sampler today, looks great and can't wait! Thanks for the advice!

Definitely get samples first to see if you like the scent. Sometimes I like a fragrance at first and then after two or three wears I get sick of it and sometimes the opposite happens.

Most department stores will be glad to give you a fistful of samples that will keep you busy for a couple of weeks before you purchase a bottle.

That's true. My mom used to work at LS Ayre's, now Macy's, and she was friends with one of the guys in the fragrance dept. He always gave her some fragrance samples for me to wear... it was pretty sweet.

I work at the mall, so I'm going to go in and ask for some samples today. Also, what should I look for in a nighttime scent? Something more... spicy? All the ones I've looked at are daytime ones.

Try Banana Republic's Black Walnut or Cordovan.

I wear Cordovan any time I go out at night. Love it.

I'll second Banana Republic's Cordovan, but only at night when you're going out. It'd be weird to smell like that during the day.

Whoa! Day and nighttime colognes? Aw damn, I've always worn the same thing all day.

What's the purpose of that?
