Anyone try 10,000 steps a day???

I've heard a lot about the fitness regimen that asks you to take 10,000 steps a day using that inexpensive computer things that keeps track. Apparently, it's a lot harder than it seems, but if you can do it regularly, you will be in good shape (provided you are eating fairly well). Anyone try this? Feedback please... MIKE

The computer is called a "pedometer". Most exercise like walking is good for you. Yes, go do it.

Isn't 10,000 about 4 miles?  I have a pedometer, and I think I recall one mile equalling approximately 2,500 steps, depending on how long your stride is. I work a retail job during the summers, where I am constantly walking back and forth in a large store.  I clipped a pedometer to my belt, and at the end of a 9-hour shift it had shown I had walked nearly 7 miles.

Oh I get the question now, I thought 10,000 steps was a workout program. Any rigid workout program that you haven't designed and fit to yourself tends to not work as well. For example, suppose working out you run/walk 4 miles (10,000 steps I guess) a day. Does this mean you are going to have big biceps, a ripped chest, and impressive abs? If you did more than 4 miles a day and now do this, you will probably gain weight, and if you did less, you may lose a little - but should you stop there? Go to the gym and figure out how much cardio you can do (I tend to stop after 45 minutes so as not to waste muscle) AND then lift weights.

You would be well advised to change your thinking. You must never rely on exercise to lose weight. Why? Because exercise is [generally]boring [for most people] and is not sustainable into old age. lt is best to use diet to lose the weight because good dietary habits are sustainable. Think diet first and exercise second.

I can't picture myself eating grass at every meal for the rest of my life, but I already work out 4+ times a week and have for years. Different strokes...

I climb about 3000 -4500 feet on my stair stepper (hour to hour and a half) four times a week. Works for me.

I work out 5 times a week. Couldn't do without it. On the other hand, one day eating sprouts or simply without meat/coffee/a treat would make me go ballistic, and go to bed pretty hungry as well as angry.

thanks for all the replies. The 10000 steps a day is recommended by both the American and Canadian government bodies as a healthy way to keep active, but is not meant to REPLACE all cardio. I play hockey twice a week as well. So, no one has tried the 10000 steps a day thing??? CHeers, MIKE

Everyone needs to move to lower Manhattan... get a walkup apt in a prewar building and carry your groceries.
