I actually have the tie above. An offering by Shaya; one of those that is very beautiful but has limited use ( to me). I don't think i have ever worn mine yet.

The problems i have with it are:

a) I am an inveterate wearer of candy-striped shirts and light-blue solid with a smattering of white solids. Which gives a headache cocktail of scale variance and blandness (too much blue) and limited use.

bi)My English sensibilities. Self-explanatory.
ii) Each time i look at it, i think my solid Navy Gren. and Knit would do better.

c) I wear and own more suits than i do OJs and with OJs i often reach for a knit or textured solid.

It is a lovely tie nonetheless.

Totally understand the English sensibility burden

(part of the family, by marriage, is English).

Sounds like there are issues about color and scale you are raising (just trying to understand and no doubt, I've misunderstood).

I'm not following why the color point works against that tie, which is a midnight. On scale: I actually don't have a problem with the scale of the stripes and the stripes in the shirt above, though I can see why someone would. Some might say the stripes are too similar in width between tie and shirt, but another way to look at it is that the stripes form a unit on the tie that is not repeated on the shirt. The similarity in width can actually be something that ties the two together even as the tie differs from the shirt in the other dimension.

If one focuses on a "rule" (and I'm not saying that you are, Mr. TRC), then one might look at the combination and think "scale invariance" = fail. But maybe there are other nuances in how things are put together. Or that is how I rationalize the fit, given that my own eye told me, that's ok.

That said, I'm coming off grenadines. I like them, but they are of limited use to an odd jacket wearer like myself. I'm actually moving to pointed knits as an alternative. Much more casual. Perhaps we should discuss those next...

I'm sure the mid-grey one is going to get a lot of love here, but it doesn't do much for me. It looks too jacket-like and seems like it would be hard to wear. The navy and bitter chocolate look nice, but I agree that there are serious lighting issues with those pictures.

Obviously I feel differently about stripes although I don't actually wear them much. I'd estimate that the actual percentages of time spent wearing each type of tie would be 70% solid/20% neat/10% stripe.

Yeah ill probably skip the drop and try for an Embassy of Style 6fold grenadine fina. Its gonna come up to 100 eur with shipping but thats at least 50-60 eur less than the same from hober (due in no smallmpart to import taxes) so if its good...

On the percentages id say i wear 70 solids 29 neats and maybe once in a blue moon a stripe (mostly cause i have them around and they're good ties).

I actually got a nice luciano barbera neat on ebay and it came in a bundle with a purple tonal block which i cant for the life of me wear

Does anyone have a Kent Wang grenadine and a Chippneckwear grenadine? I want to see the difference between the fina and gross weave.

I had the Chipp in navy and burgundy, but have since given them away. The interlining was so thick that it was really tough to get a good knot. IIRC, the weave was fina, compared to the grossa of the KW I just got. I personally prefer grossa as the texture is more apparent from a distance, and it seems to span the bridge between formal and casual well. I also like how KW's knot.

Sorry, I only have a Wang, not a Chipp.

The Wang is pretty old and it's my understanding that they've changed for the better. I can't remember who it was who mentioned that; it might have been @Claghorn

Cheers,

Ac

I have a Kent navy grenadine tie

However, I'm doing a GMTO for a 3.5'' chipp grenadine. Chipp offers colors that Kent doesn't so I'm considering buying more than one. However, I want some input on the Chipp ties before I order more than one and perhaps a side by side comparison.

It's interesting how people come at the issue of striped ties from different perspectives--musical, cultural, etc. I think about them in terms of painting/drawing (though I can't do either). Angled lines create a visual sense of movement and energy. The level of excitation can be modulated by breaking the lines, changing the number and spacing between the lines, and varying their width and colors (and the colors of backgrounds), among other things. As a result, I've come to think that evaluating them or classifying them on their own as good or bad is kind of pointless (assuming the materials are of acceptable quality and the colors not obnoxious). If I think I can compose one with the other elements of an outfit in a way that pleases the eye, I'll consider it.

I come away from these first 100+ posts with the impression that Clags has some funny ideas about ties. :)
