This is a general historical assessment. The future must come out of history, causally speaking (discussion of "time" notwithstanding), whether linear is debatable. Religion need not resemble anything, but ideological foundation alone hasn't helped in the past -- most recently, the Soviet Union.
And we may never know about Iceland and it's upcoming 100% atheist population because rising oceans will cause geological uplift , and as it rises out of water greater volcanic activity will follow and we won't ever reach that crucial 3rd generation data point...
