Blaming the media for shootings is like the conservative equivalent of liberals blaming guns for mass shootings. That's not to say that the media doesn't have some responsibility and that the ease of obtaining guns by whackos doesn't play a factor. However, it's such a complex problem, and the need for each side of the political divide to assign blame so simply only makes the problem worse by not allowing us to really try to develop some real solutions. Politicians, the media, and all of us spend more time bickering over nonsense and trying to blame the policies of the other side. These events happen and everybody just runs to their corners. It's sad, because that's the worst way to solve the problem.

Half of the country likes the U.S., the other half believes it is racist and should be fundamentally transformed (destroyed).

Not much room for agreement anymore.

Blaming the media isn't necessarily a political position. Blaming the NRA most definitely is.

Watching the news conference - the reporters are morons. "Do you know where the suspects are?", asking the same questions two three times (e.g. what types of guns where they?) etc. I'd like to know if there is a perimeter set up.

CNN just took possible upwards of 1 shooter to upwards of 3. Lord, what a PoS news agency.

so... no suspects, no motives...

so far i've heard "domestic extremist/hate group" or foreign terrorist/sympathizer.

i've not heard anybody mention cartel or otherwise gang hit as of yet. dunno why not, seems as likely as anything else in san berdoo.

What's a "real solution" then?  Most of the mass shooters wouldn't have failed any background checks that have been proposed.  Giving government access to medical records isn't exactly a real solution either: besides being unconstitutional, it would only lead to less people seeing psychological help.

I'm not proposing any solution to the problem, but I am suggesting that there is a link between increased shootings and increased media attention on shooters which there is a peer-reviewed article that indicates that is true:https://asunow.asu.edu/content/researchers-find-mass-killings-school-shootings-are-contagious

Los Dinos is a gang infested shithole, but I doubt gangs would get a green light for something like that. Way too much attention already.

I wouldnt say media (news) in general but just look at the difference in society in almost 2 generations. People went off to war and saw horrors, came home and most never spoke of them. (A rough time no doubt and I cant imagine what it was like). Now just about everyone sees unimaginable things on a daily basis.

I just had my first holy sh!t moment the other week while watching football with my 3 yo daughter. A commercial came on for a video game (sorry forgot which one) that depicted a woman/assasin jumping a guy from above with a knife. My daughter was glued on it I'm surprised she didnt say anything about it. It kinda scared me to expose her to it. The graphics are also so real these days it almost looked real.

But yeah, I think as a society we've opened up to more graphic and horrific scenes and that may cause more and more copycats and people trying to one up.

Here's my prediction:

1: The San Bernadino shooters will turn out to be immigrants with names like Mohammed and Ali, and Saeid.

2: Police raids on their living space will turn up evidence that shows that the perpetrators are sympathetic to various Muslim groups that are opposed to the United States.

3: Main stream media will ignore the ramifications of 1, and 2 above and describe this as workplace violence, and politicians will call for tighter gun control.

Jesus Christ shut the fuck up, Kai. But Ali is an interesting choice, so you think these are Shi'a terrorists? Goddamnit you are fucking dumb.

From the NYTimes:

"Investigators believe there were three gunmen and one of them had worked at the facility and recently had a dispute with fellow employees, according to law enforcement officials.

A witness has told police that although the gunmen had their faces covered, one of them sounded and appeared very similar to an employee who had left the facility earlier in the day.

“They had their appearances covered but a witness believed it had been someone who worked there,” said one official."

Since this was a sort of mental health center, what group in the USA hates psychology and psychiatry more than the Scientologists?
