I couldn't imagine a less perfect world if everyone agreed with me. It would be rather boring. On the plus side though, everyone would be well dressed.

Only the ability for an individual to plausibly knock an airliner out of the sky begins to test my libertarian beliefs...

i can't abide the widespread use of the term "tragedy" to describe mass shootings, acts of terrorism, massacres, etc.

the term transforms a willful act of hostility and violence into something akin to fate. i find it a strange romanticization - almost a justification - of victimhood. at best it's unacceptable twisting of language. to draw an analogy, is rape ever "tragic"?

i don't consider this a simple hangup or pet peeve. i think it's a serious, damaging cultural mistake to use language so carelessly (i won't even consider an argument that it is deliberate). these moments aren't tragedies.

I think youre veering too far towards Sophocles or Shakespeare on this one 00.

#1 def:
"a lamentable, dreadful, or fatal event or affair; calamity; disaster"

I analyzed N.H.L. data from 1980 to 2007 for 737 professional players born in the Canadian prairies. The players share a common environment in the ice rink, but those who were born in areas historically outside the reach of the Mounties were penalized more often — an average of about 1.4 minutes per game — than those who were not — an average of about 1 minute per game. That 0.4 minute difference actually amounts to about 100 additional penalty minutes over a player’s career.

Of course you are going to have discipline problems if your parents are the only ones in authority, and setting up all the rules. Some people need some kind of discipline, and code to live by that parents can't give you. Like the military for example, and I guess some people actually need Cops to keep them in check.

Well actually who the fuck knows? I mean the Amish ain't known for punching teeth out.

lol. I suppose englade thinks Im a crazy man now. My lil heroin/assault rifle poast was neither a reference to 'Nam nor some kind of nutso hockey goon rambling. I was merely trying to illustrate what would be considered acceptable in my theoretical ultralibertarian society. Anything goes until you mess with somebody or somebody's stuff. (civil liberties/private property) ..things that "offend" people visually are considered trifling, irrelevant, variable person to person and not caught up by legislation of any kind.

i think you're giving the term too much breadth:

dis·as·ter
dəˈzastər/
noun

  1. a sudden event, such as an accident or a natural catastrophe, that causes great damage or loss of life.
"159 people died in the disaster"
synonyms: catastrophecalamitycataclysmtragedy, act of God, holocaust
    "a subway disaster"
    • denoting a genre of films that use natural or accidental catastrophe as the mainspring of plot and setting.
      modifier noun: disaster
      "a disaster movie"
    • an event or fact that has unfortunate consequences.
      "a string of personal disasters"
synonyms: misfortunemishapmisadventuremischancesetbackreversal, stroke of bad luck, blow
      "a string of personal disasters"

i appreciate the distinction between literature and IRL (and i might be veering ill grant you), but even the google def basically implies plain old raw, shitty circumstance, not human will or effort. imo if you took every time the word "tragedy" as used in these contexts and replaced it with "outrage" i'd feel like we were being a little more honest. hell, i'd even take "our failure" at least then there'd be a hint of responsibility, as opposed to the guiltless quality that tragedy imparts.
