Hmmm, not loving the Mini 14 price and looks like I'd have to place the action into an aftermarket scary looking stock.

They're a bit more than an AR-15.  What are you looking at spending on the AR?

$762 for the one with adjustable stock:

You can find a sale every now and again to get them for ~$700.  Though after Orlando, who knows - prices will be moving up.

I have a friend working at a Sportsman Warehouse and he says he can get me a 15% discount on a Bushmaster. Again, just so many damn models and options.

I can't really blame non-major media sources for misreporting the type of weapon (especially since the AR15 itself is a bit of a generic term referring to guns made by many manufacturers to the same basic design).

The major media outlets should get their facts straight...they have reporters on the ground who can verify things and editors who can change stories to say "rumored to be...".

But it only came out recently what kind of gun was used, and that article was published 2 days ago. If NBC and CNN are telling you it is an AR15 (and the AR15 itself is an incredibly common, best-selling product), then why would you suspect otherwise?

And his statement would be just as true if he said "same type of weapon" rather than "same weapon"

But yeah, that guy's just trying to mimic the 7-minute woman for clicks...but didn't have the balls to actually pay for it.

Several versions of it. Including the shorter barrel NRA edition.

And yes, Piob, the Ranch will fire both 5.56 and .223 no probs.

Of course it matters. The AR-15 has become a dog whistle to scare people. I called it right away that it probably wasn't actually an AR-15. And it's not accurate to call it the "same type of weapon." If Caitlyn runs over another person is it just as accurate to say she ran a kid over in a Toyota Camry (the best selling car in America) even though she ran the kid over in a Ford Focus? They're pretty much the same car, but they're not the same car. And it's inaccurate shit.

AR-15 is not a generic term. The fucking media is trying to turn it into a representation of all "evil guns". Just say a rifle until you have more specific information. You can even throw in "semi-automatic rifle" if it makes you feel better.

But stop fucking lying and making shit up. I'm fucking tired of it.

EDIT - I also don't get this "I was able to buy an Ar-15 in 5 minutes" shit. How long should it fucking take? The "instantaneous background check" is supposed to be instantaneous. That's the whole fucking point. Jesus fuck these people are fucking stupid.

Saying "semi-automatic rifle" would help people from assuming it was fully automatic, which as I mentioned above, I have anecdotally run into several folks that firmly believed this was the case based on what they discerned in media reports.

They should just use the term automatic which is also correct.

"Rapid fire death stick" is what they're trying to convey.

Not specific enough. It's semi-automatic. That is the most specific term they could have used right after the shooting until they had more information.

How about "self-loading" that sounds kind of arcane and scary.

Sure it is.

Piob just talked about shopping for an AR-15 and then said he was looking at a Bushmaster.

If it's not a colt, it's not an AR-15. It is an XM-15 or an M&P15 or a something else....and any number of variations on the design still get referred to as AR-15s

No fair referring to me for a data point as it's well known I'm an idiot.

How does that help? people only hear the "automatic" part of semi-automatic and assume it means ratatatatatatata.

Saw something yesterday that said ominously that it was a semi-automatic weapon capable of firing as many as 45 rounds per minute. Plenty of people probably hear that and think it sounds crazy and fast.
