does lotion actually cause more dryness?

My hands and face get dry every winter when the heaters are on all day. So I usually use lotion. But I keep hearing lotion can be counterproductive because it's a like a drug for your skin -- once you stop, or reduce usage, your skin goes into withdrawal and you need even more lotion. So this year I decided, no lotion. My hands look like leather that's been left in the sun for a few years. Should I give in?

Put the lotion on your hands or you'll get the hose.

I am 53. I have a brother and a sister and of the three of us, I'm the only one who has used a daily moisturizer since our 20's. My skin has far less lines and looks younger than theirs. My skin is normally dry. Without the daily use of lotion I'm sure there would be a major difference. Go for the lotion.
