Can black and brown live together?

A question that his plaguing me for at least a good five minutes: Is 'OK' to wear brown shoes when you also have on a black shirt/sweater?  Example:  tan khakis, black sweater - which shoes?   From the Far Side of the World, Bryan jeep4wdva

I'd probably go with cordovan, if that's an option, but any shade of 'brown' would certainly be better than black with khakis, regardless of the sweater. In fact I can't imagine ANY color of chinos -- tan, khaki, olive, white... even black, frankly -- for which a black shoe would trump something in the cordovan or brown families. But I'm eager to be persuaded otherwise...

It might be a fashion mistake to some but I would wear a heavy black brogue. At times I like the contrast that black offers with chinos.

OK, let me take it a step further: black turtleneck with casual pants. Does that change things? Thanks. Bryan jeep4wdva fashion neophyte
