@HOPPER Owners:

'Thought I'd share my Cat's Paw experience w/ you peeps regarding wear & durability for reconsideration__ a swap to a more durable Vibram 705 composite half soles.

I've had mine on the LoneWolf for less than a year of effective wear. IMO, [heritage] nostalgia is great, but short live & impractical, in this case. Base on the rate of the soles wearing in from [light] use, they'll need a re-sole in about 2yrs. The heels, I don't mind/care cuz they're an easy fix.

I really don't feel like going through a re-sole that quickly. 'Got boots 3-5 y/o that show less sole wear than the PAWs.

I find Cat's Paw more comfortable, but softer than Biltrite and Vibram, which likely accounts for the faster wear down. I love the Cat's Paw heels on the Garage Boot and Half Japanese. I just put a heel guard on them and it protects against wear down while still remaining comfortable. I think I could go 5 - 10 years just swapping out guards. I'm sure there is some solution for soles to slow wear as well. All that said...that is some excessive wear! What kind of terrain are you traversing??!

Like I said, re-heel, I don't mind__ but re-sole is more costly, takes longer ..... & opens up the possibility of a botch re-sole job 😕

Now, if I have to riddle the sole w/taps or w/e just to preserve the soles !?!?!? ... That'll be dumb. Its either you embrace the concept wholly or not.

It was discussed awhile back that there's a limited availability on the CP half-soles. IMO, now is the time to re-evaluate, since GMTO has not kick into production just yet.

Re the GMTO...I think Fok said they didn't have enough CP half soles and that it would likely be CP heels and vibram half soles.  I think I made a fuss about it at the time, but after seeing yours, I'm glad.  It's funny...I remember the old days when CP seemed to last forever. And I have some vintage shoes with Biltrite heels and soles and they are bulletproof!  Yours look like they're 25 years old!  I'd just send them back and swap them out for Vibram and call it a day.

'Got Biltrite Neoprene Cords on my Dayton Drivers. Had them for 5yrs= @round 2yrs of effective wear. The soles are showing only slight wear__ sooo darn durable. Heels were recently replaced w/ Vibram composite.

CP half/soles are on their site http://www2.american-biltrite.com/pub/library.nsf/E37C0BEDB0E7D63E852576F10045D3E0/$FILE/Footwear_Men's%20Half%20Heels.pdf

Also found them on a Canadian site, Bilrite also

Sorry, but this is not going to happen.  It's logistically already difficult to do these GMTOs, especially with Viberg's production capacity stretched, and I am certainly not going to open things up to changes this late into the game. The issues with catspaw have been widely documented, and I also alluded to them, that Vibrams are actually much more practical and functional.  The GMTO will stay as originally planned - the full unit if available, the heel only and the Vibram half sole otherwise.

For all intents and purposes, the moment a GMTO is closed, you should assume that no further changes can be made.  I'm much more open to changes before that.

Cheers,

Fok.

C'mon Fok, what the Hoppers really need is a full ripple sole. :D

Given that my boots are going to come in a bloody enormous size (13 for you stats fans), I suspect that I'll be getting the Vibram soles in any case. Vintage clothing tends to come up smaller, and I can't imagine that many large Cats Paws were made back in the day.

Any idea of an ETA yet, or is it when they arrive?

Hopefully soon, but yes, when they freakin' arrive.

I do have some more confidence now about getting them in decent-ish time now though.

Cheers,

Fok.

So, I do have some news, which is that that boots are going to be with the Vibram half sole and catspaw heel, which I feel is probably the best combination of nostalgia and practicality anyway.  I suppose that you guys are all free to disagree.

Cheers,

Fok.

I've owned neither.

I've heard that the cat's paw wears out quickly, which is generally the case with higher friction compounds. I was admittedly looking forward to the cat's paw half sole, but I'm sure I can get them put on when the Vibrams wear out, assuming the darn things fit in the first place.
