These small armholes are killing me! (semi-rant inside)

Been doing a lot of shopping lately, (I'm a recent forum convert and just lost 25 lbs, so I'm doing a major wardrobe overall) and I must say I'm getting mighty frustrated with not being able to wear otherwise nice fitting pieces because I can barely get my arms through them and, when I do, they bunch up around the top of the arms and are horribly uncomfortable.

For example, today I tried on a Rag & Bone work jacket. Great looking piece, price was right, and it fits me perfectly - except for the bloody armholes! Other offenders include BOO, NSF, etc. - the list goes on.

I spend some time in the gym, but I'm no body builder. Can't these companies build clothes that guys with average guns can hope to wear well? What exactly is the effect they are trying to pull off?

BTW, am I right in assuming that a tailor isn't going to be able to help with the R&B work jacket? I'd really love to keep it.

Maybe I should just stop working out and develop a heroin addiction?

I'm not sure how this season's work jacket from Rag and Bone is constructed, but a good tailor might be able to make the arm holes wider and if so, it won't be by much. I wouldn't bother buying it if it were me though (I can barely fit in Rag and Bone's stuff myself, and I usually have to size up).

I believe that there are plenty of brands that have normal/low armholes.

How ironic---I have trouble finding dress shirts or jackets in local stores with armholes that are high enough. I'm sure a lot of the slimmer, younger guys around here have the same problem.

Something like 80% of the brands in America have large armholes, but it just so happens you're going for the brands that are tighter.

I feel your pain. I'm an ex-swimmer with decent sized arms. I rushed into MTM and custom clothing with unbridled enthusiam for high armholes only to find that they were ridiculously uncomfortable for me. It's a shame that most tailors don't measure upper arm circumference.

RTW is a different animal. I have trouble fitting shirts and jackets, but at least you can try it on and reject it. BOO doesn't fit me, and neither to a lot of Euro designer stuff. I was surprised to find a Dries Van Noten shirt that fit, however, the quality isn't good, the fused collar rippled after a single wash (hang dry). I have a R&B short sleeved shirt and it fits fine.

a tailor can deepen an armhole about 1/2 inch before it starts to distort. yea thats the limit on the vertical. horizontally theres no way he can do that. just size up.

I also bought a R&B boxshirt, which fits fine. It's not cut particularly slim, though.

+1,000 It's so hard to find stuff with armholes that are high enough.

I hope you were joking out about not working out as much. Girls are usually more attracted to a more defined thicker arm. I'm not saying you have to be huge but some of these brands do make arm holes for people with scrawny builds, aka guys built like 14 year old girls. You'll stumble upon brands but I can't think of any off the top of my head. Don't worry it'll be alright.

I was indeed joking about not working out - just venting. A heroin addiction seems like a strong possibility though.

I'm not sure how high the armholes are on some of the pieces you're describing, but I can wear Attolini and Borreli jackets without issues... If you're really really jacked I suppose it might be a problem, though.
