Merlot suggestions

I've been asked by a friend for a Merlot recommendation and too be honest it's not something I drink very often. Not sure why he wants a Merlot in particular and he didn't really give me an idea of price range.

Anyone have any ideas for me to pass on?

Thank, that seems like a great suggestion and probably in around the price point he would look for. In addition would you be able to also give suggestions at both a higher and lower price. I'm not sure what his purpose for buying is and want to give him some options.

www.corkd.com << worth a glance I think many would suggest getting him off of Merlot altogether.

Sorry, like you, I'm not a merlot guy. I just happened to get a couple of bottles of this in a mixed case purchase and liked it, then found out it is a highly regarded merlot by merlot lovers. For the lower price points, I'd check into a South American or Aussie source that is well recommended by WS or the like. Both regions are good bargins at this time.

Hope this helps.

I bought a few bottles of a really cheap merlot ($5 a bottle) that turned out to be quite drinkable by Crane Lake.
I like $5 bottles of wine.

I was going to say that he should suggest cooking with it, but certainly not drinking it. I was taking a break from being an ass, however, now that you've opened the door...

If you can find it, try the 2002 Robledo Los Carneros merlot.

Has he ever tried any of the Red Zifandel's, I've always found Merlots to be a little pretentious.

I have nothing against Merlots (as there are some good ones), but for the most part, the majority are only one step up from a White Zifandel.

Pride Mountain, Paloma, and Switchback Ridge (all have Robert Foley as the winemaker, I think).

Chateau Petrus (Bordeaux, if your friend has $1,000+ for a bottle)

Paloma, is one I would definately agree with you on.

I'm not a wine drinker, but some of my friends who are say that Charles Shaw (aka 2 buck Chuck) from Trader Joe's is a pretty good and inexpensive option.
