How long should a suit jacket be?

As the title suggests--

On Black Friday in NYC I could have gotten a GREAT deal on a Hickey Freeman Madison--$518 (from $1500) at Saks. However, I felt like the jacket was just too short. It may have been because the sleeves were too short so it was something of an illusion. But, can anybody give me a definitive way to tell if a jacket is the correct length?

Thanks

P.S.-I still did OK on Black Friday--I got a pair of AE Hales for 30% off. Their store was having a 20% off sale, and their only pair of 12B's in black had a slight scuff on it, so I bargained and got another 10 off.

A jacket should completely cover your butt in the back. I would be carefull buying a jacket with short sleeves. You want to make sure there is a enough fabric to let them out.

Anywhere from the base of the thumb to the tip, as long as your rear is covered.

Half your butt works too.

Classic length:
At a minimum your butt should be covered. some say to the first knuckle of your thumb. Overriding principle of jacket length is to maximize your leg length so as to give illusion of tallness. This is especially important to shorter man. Taller men, or those with longer legs, can afford to have longer jackets as this does not make them look short. Classic Savile Row teaching is to take length from bottom of collar of jacket to floor, and divide by half to achieve jacket length.

Fashion of the moment length:
Currently it's all the rage to have jackets very short. Like all things "fashionable" this will play itself out shortly (puns intended). Your trendy jacket of today will be completely uselss tomorrow when short jacket is no longer trendy.

I think that in general men wear their jackets way too long. Half of the butt is too short for me, but mine are generally just short of fully covering. Anything longer just looks like too much to me.

I am tall and have a long torso, so I always follow the rule that you have a jacket long enough to cover your rear end. However, Last year I bought a navy colored jacket that was about two inches shorter and I really liked the shorter fit. To match I had the sleeves a "tad" shorter than usual and the overall look is very nice. Of course the lapels are a bit narrower and I wear a slightly smaller shirt collar and narrower tie to keep everything in scale. None of this is TB short or skinny, just a bit of a shift from the last ten years for me. I'm sure this will be a good look for a few more years.

I agree with Matt.

For years, I wore jackets too long based on the advice of salespeople. They suggested Longs in an effort to get my sleeves long enough. A few years ago I realized that my jackets were much too long and that a Regular looks much better and still covers my butt adequately.

a shorter jacket looks good on most except the very tall. half is too much for me too so maybe something in between those two.
