Embossing initials or name on leather briefcase

I want to have my initials (or name, if possible) embossed onto my leather briefcase. How does one go about looking for someone who can do this, and how does one gauge if he can do it well? How much should it cost, approximately?

As an extension to this question, if you purchase a new briefcase, is it more cost-effective to have your initials added yourself? Would this hold for other items such as wallets, or engraving on an umbrella handle?

Apologies if this is a completely obvious route you've already explored, but manufacturers often provide this service. You can check out http://www.hartmann.com/shop/aboutMonogramming.asp to see Hartmann's pricing/info.

Also, if I remember correctly, my dad got his leather briefcases/portfolios monogrammed at those random luggage shops that every mall seems to have. If the manufacturer of your briefcase doesn't provide monogramming, I'm thinking your best bet is to call up a couple of the better luggage/leather goods stores in your area.

I thought this thread was titled "Embarrassing initials or name on leather briefcase"

I would have liked that better.

The likes of MFER and Michael Huntsucker MUST be embossed on SOMETHING!!!

Embossing your name on a briefcase seems excessive. Remind me of when I was in the first grade and my mom would write my name on my brown bagged lunch so it wouldn't get mixed up with the other kids.

If that is excessive. Then what the hell is this.

I was going to emboss my name on my bluetooth headset but it's too small.

I agree, that also looks worse. A briefcase with his name on it would be a welcome distraction.

Maybe you should try a bigger bluetooth headset, try circuit city of radio shack. PM me if you need addresses for either store, friend.

Almost makes you think Eric Glennie has a shot, doesn't it?

I had a custom lid-over attache made by Swaine Adeney and had my name embossed on the front, above the handle but under the closed lid, so my name is only seen when the lid is open. It is impressed onto the leather without gold leaf or other hightlights and so is quite subtle. Swaine told me they could do initials at any point, but could only emboss an entire name before the leather was stitched together into the case (which makes me think you will have more luck having your initials put on a finsihed case than your entire name).

If the name is hidden on the inside, then it would be really nice. But if it's visible from the outside when people first see it, it looks odd.

Not at all. I don't bother, but it's done all the time--extremely commonplace.

Interesting. Any pics of what this would look like? Maybe I'm just having trouble visualizing it.
