Excuse me where did you buy....?

Does anyone else feel uncomfortable asking strangers (men, essentially) about the provenance of a particular item of clothing or accessory?

What makes you uncomfortable about it, the imposition on the person or the potential that they are interpretting it as some kind of come on?

It's a slightly uncomfortable question because while it shows that you like whatever they have, you're interested in having it for yourself rather than appreciating it for what it is. I suppose imitation is the sincerest form, however...

Personally, I find it a little awkward when asked where I got something because oftentimes it's either from Jantzen or the Buying & Selling forum. Why yes, these shoes were used by some man on the internet with whom I talk about clothing. These pants, they're from Atelier EdMorel, perhaps you've heard of them?

Gold. I'm going to use that line next time someone asks me that.

the former.

I find that most guys get a smile when you ask them, and give a kind of a "thank you for noticing, it is pretty cool isn't it" look.

I don't mind the question as much as the dreaded "how much did that cost you?"

I guess it depends on how wealthy the person asking the question is. I don't feel right telling a fellow student who is having trouble paying for his basic needs that I blew this or that amount on clothes, or that I got it at some nice store.

I usually say I don't remember.

I do it sometimes.

In my experience, guys don't mind, and some are quite pleased.

Plus you can meet interesting people.

Once on the subway, the wearer of a shirt I admired had made it himself...it was Bruce Cameron Clark.

I've asked and been asked. While I find no problem with it, I'm willing to bet a sizable portion of the male population is off-put by asking such a question, as stupid as it seems.

Just from what I've seen with peers and people in workfield and how I'd feel: It may be surprising and/or unexpected, but I wouldn't say it was uncomfortable. Usually males don't pay attention to that kind of thing, so if someone asks a guy about a certain piece, he may be proud or flattered that something he had caught someone else's eye that much.

I usually just say I don't know. I don't like people knowing what I'm wearing. I hate it when people make assumptions about my status just becuase I'm wearing a shirt I got on the internet.

"I say old old chap, could I possibly impose upon your leisurely stroll and inquire as to from which gentleman's purveyor of fine clothings you purchased your, er, morning suit...?"

I think it must be because I'm English and reluctant to ask such a question of a stranger.

Are United Statians less reluctant, generally, to ask this form of question of a stranger?

Most of my friends are the type to brag about how cheap they bought thier jeans for... like... "got these for $5 from Old Navy/JCPennies" so I try not to advertise the fact that my jeans are $100-260.

I will usually tell the brand they are, and when asked about where I bought them, I will say I bought them from the internet. There have been exactly 2 times when people who asked have known about Diesel. One was another guy I'm pretty close friends with and his eyes just got wide and he asked how much they costed and I said "they were pretty expensive"

The other one is a funny story... I went to lunch with 2 coworkers and one of thier wives. As we were leaving, his wife was behind me and noted that she had never seen a back pocket like mine (his wife was looking at my butt? -awkward) and asked what kind. I said Diesel. The next day at work, that coworker said "so my wife tells me you wear expensive jeans." (i guess they had a conversation about me).

Was with my woman once and another woman came up behind us and asked me where I got my pants. She wanted to get them for her dude, I think. That was weird.
