Dear Old Oatmeal

After spending years being at a loss for something good to eat for breakfast, I've rediscovered oatmeal. I'm not talking about the instant type, but the good old kind you cook on the stovetop and flavor to your own preferences.

Who else loves oatmeal?

Cinnamon & Spice. I can't STAND brown sugar/honey in oatmeal, regardless if it's instant or not.

I like it, the rich, wholesome oatmeal. Both traditional and instant. There's a new barley hot cereal called Simple Harvest I like too.

Quaker oatmeal: It's the right thing to do.

I eat a bowl of 'em with raw sugar 6 days a week for 2 years now. Don't really like them that much, but it keeps me from posting in the colon cleansing thread.

(Making and eating) old-fashioned oats builds character. Steel oats, even more so.

I love oatmeal. I have the McCanns and the Snoqualmie Lodge type which are both whole oats and take a while to make. They are excellent and I prefer a traditional butter/brown sugar approach, with milk or half-n-half if I have it around (rare). Even the instant type, though it tends to be like eating gruel or that Matrix food, will at least keep me going for a very long time in the morning, more than anything else I can think of. The organic instant type is much better than the regular kind, a little more like real oats than just ground glue.

Forgive my ignorance. Is oatmeal the same as porridge? I love porridge made on the stove for a winter breakfast, with some blue gum honey stirred through it.

From what I can gather oatmeal is a type of porridge which is just a general term for boiled grain/legume cereal. Oatmeal is obviously made of oats. Another good one is Cream of Wheat - I used to make this all the time. But oatmeal definitely keeps you going a lot longer - I imagine it's the hard-to-break-down grains that provide "time release" energy.

No brown sugar? What the hell is wrong with you?!? Maybe a dash of Salsa Lizano would be more to your tasting...

I love oatmeal with a splash of whole milk, real Canadian maple syrup and a tablespoon of wheat germ sprinkled on top. Anybody else use wheat germ? This is how we've always done it in the ninja household.

Hamlyn's Pinhead or McCann's steelcut with brown sugar, steamed milk, raisins and some toasted pecans, It just doesn't get any better. Except for the few days I still allow eggs over, sausage and homefries, but that may just be because I'm denying them to myself on a regular basis.

Oatmeal is the perfect food to eat before embarking on a full day of hunting with my brothers.

During the holidays I add cranberries and a pinch of ground clove. Rest of the year, blueberries, or strawberries or whatever fruit is on hand, a bit of sugar, maybe a bit of cream, and I am a happy camper.
