What do you think of these safety razors?

I'm looking into getting one and I'm checking these out http://www.theartofshaving.com/taos6...67003&group=11 http://www.theartofshaving.com/taos6...67007&group=11 Any others you could recommend? There's no real description on these that could tell the differences. I'm not sure what to look for really. I notice the second one says "adjustable blade" What do they mean by that?

I like the 2nd one.

Both are made by Merkur. For way more info than you'll ever need, repost your question on http://www.badgerandblade.com/. That said, the first razor I believe is known as the Merkur HD. A lot of guys like it for the heft. Very classic and popular Merkur and it also comes in gold plate (one of my favorites). The second is an adjustable Merkur. An adjustable razor permits you to alter the pitch of the blade so that you can control the closeness of the shave. This particular Merkur is adjusted by twisting the knob at the end of the handle. You can buy either through a number of online outlets that may have better prices than AOS. Hope this helps. Fair warning: once you enter the world of double edge shaving, you will never go back to a one of those multi-bladed disposables.

I used the HD, but now have gone to straight razors. The HD is a very nice razor, but you'll have an adjustment to make as these do not pivot. Accordingly your shaves will be inferior until you get the blade angle and technique just right.

Have you used a DE razor before?
I've had both of those razors and I use a Gillette Superspeed currently.
If you have never used a DE before I would highly advise you get the first razor you posted. Newbies like to play around with the settings too much on adjustable razors before they really learn how the razor shaves....this makes the razor cut differently each time and you never really get used to how the razor works. Get a non-adjustable and learn that razor before you proceed on to adjustables.
I would suggest buying a used Gillette.....they are really cool razors and easy to find. Check out your local flea market/junk stores. I have bought and sold so many and it's kind of fun finding them.
Quit hating America and buy a Gillette!
Anyho...my two cents.

Oof da...those prices are about one-third higher than they should be. The "heavyweight" razor is actually a Merkur "HD" (Heavy Duty AKA 34C) and the "adjustable" razor is actually a Merkur Progress. Google either and you'll find all sorts of sources for lower cost. Check out these two videos about safety razors in general and this video about adjustable razors.

I gotta agree with these guys... Go with the Merkur HD. You can score one from Ebay alot cheaper than the one you linked to. I still use mine almost every day.

Though the Progress is a good razor, having an adjustable for your first razor will mess with you. Start simple and go from there.

DE shaving is all about technique. Work on that before moving up to an adjustable.

One big thing that you should also pay attention to is your choice of blades. I personally use Feathers (which are stupidly sharp) but when starting out I preferred Derby's because they were sharp enough to shave, but not overly sharp.

Oh... If you buy the Merkur... Be sure to throw the included blade away. They get dull from shipping and will rip your face apart.

Head over to badgerandblade.com. There's alot of info there.
