also, I don't think regular air mail offers receipt confirmation, which is something I like to have.

you can ship it international via first class, sure, but just remember , watch out, there is absolutely no tracking whatsoever so you will not be protected if it gets lost or the recipient claims never delivered. this is for ebay/paypal of course.

As I already mentioned, you can/should purchase the add-on service "Registered Mail", which is BETTER than Priority's included tracking service.

Quote:
Items you send with Registered Mail are placed under tight security from the point of mailing to the point of delivery, and insured up to $25,000 against loss or damage. And you can verify the date and time of delivery and the delivery attempts online. All destination countries have an indemnity limit of $43.73 and a registry fee of $10.15.

Hence the "I could be wrong" as well as the "around $36" which is correct. Of the 100 or so packages sent to Japan, all I have sent via priority mail have cost me $36. My post office friend said that priority and 1st class took the same amount of time. My point still stands that there is no economy. Parcel used to take up to 6 weeks and cost less than $20. By the way, shoes don't all way 4 lbs.
