Ettiquette for tipping at sushi bar

Last night I was on a dinner date and we went to a Japanese restaurant and sat at the sushi bar. We ordered Omakase (Chefs choice) for the first time and it was amazing! The chef creative a number of little dishes not on the menu and some tasty nigiri for us. Well when it came time to pay the bill we were a little stumped with how we should tip. The Sushi Chef did all the work and the waitress had only brought us our drinks. We decided that the Chef should get most of the tip and so we left a generous cash tip in his tip glass at the bar, paid the bill on a credit card and left a couple of dollars for the waitress...

Was that the right thing to do? I thought so, but then after we left I started thinking that the waitress must have thought that we were so incredibly cheap to only leave her a couple of dollars....

I'm not sure how things would have been split up if we had left all the tip on the check, or if the chef told the waitress that we tipped him.....

Did we play it the right way?

I think you did the right thing.

Can't say I'm a sushi expert, but I think you did the right thing...assuming you didn't short change the server too much.

In that situation I'd probably give the server a more modest tip and a little extra for the chef. If he has his own tip jar they are probably not shared and split.

If a chef owns the place, assume he will split all CC tips to the advantage of the chefs.

Sushi Chef's 'never' ever touch money or shake hands. Typically they will hold there clenched fist out and you gently touch your's with theirs. On the Tip. Best leave it with server, whether it be cash or credit card. The Chef's in good Sushi Bar's typically take a cut of server Tip's (north of 40%). Hope this helps.
