Any thoughts from those of you who have bought Romano Martegani shoes? Quality? Fit? I am thinking of buying a pair and am looking for a bit of guidance.

good stuff. check with rider - he's the agent and knows the lasts very well.

I bought a pair of RM Lucca's in shell cordovan from Franco's via the web after trying them on locally and discovering that the local store couldn't get shell cordovan. IMO they are better made than my comparable shell cordovan shoes made by Alden and C&J: the leather is lighter and the stitching is finer on the RM's. IIRC, they are only partially lined, if that matters to you.

The Martegani's are among my most comfortable and stylish shoes. I wear them alot, including dancing because they are so comfortable. I like them so much, I've ordered 4 more pairs of shell cordovan shoes from Ron Rider. My chelsea boots ship on 11/24 and I can't wait to get them. For shoes on the 3B last, I suggest ordering 1/2 size smaller than your usual size. Ron might be willing to ship you try-on shoes. Prior to my recent order, he sent me 4 pairs of try-on shoes, two different sizes in each of two different lasts, at no charge. I *highly* recommend the shoes, as well as Ron Rider's service.

I second Ron Rider. He is a straight shooter and a good guy to boot. He offered me the same opportunity of a "fit" pair that really helped make sure the custom ordered shell comes out just as expected...

I think the quality of shell cordovan goes up with thickness. I prefer a thick butt

I have various AEs, Santonis, Trickers and Grenson Masterpieces and like my Marteganis the best for their combination of quality and style.

Doesn't all the shell come from the same place, Horween? Are there different grades of shell?

Yes and yes, each piece has it's own characteristics- so I've heard

Hope it's not too unpolite: How much does the shoe in shell roughly cost?

I don't mind thick shell on my wingtips or chukka boots, both with storm welts, but I like the lighter weight of the RM's. To me, the main advantage of the RM shoes is really the sleeker styling, which meshes well with the lighter hide used to make them. And they crease no more than the heavier shoes by Alden or C&J.

I agree, they have some very good looking shell models on sleek lasts. Ron Rider should confirm but I believe it is partially do to the fact that the whole shoe is not lined as mentioned above.
