Sam Adams Brews

What do you guys think of Sam Adams Beers? I tend to like most of them. I really enjoy the Ocotberfest and Winter brew the best. The regualr Bosotn lager and light brew is ok as well. I don't like the cherry wheat very much. I think it has too much cherry taste. I do like the fact that they use Michigan cherries for it. Sam Adams is not the best beer around, but it is available at most places and is often the best that is being served. I have been trying to score some Utopia from Sam but don't feel lik eshelling out a few hundred for it. What do you guys think of Sam Adams beer?

I think you've got it about right. Not the greatest beer around by any stretch, but pretty good for a mass-market beer and often by far the best option in restaurants or bars with a limited selection, with the season specials often being a highlight. Don't think I've tried the cherry wehat.

A buddy of mine heard an interview with the Sam's founder. He said he got the idea of starting the brewery from a joke he had heard years before: why is American beer like having sex in a canoe? They're both fucking close to water. I consider myself a beer drinker but have a hard time with the "regular" Sam Adams. I'd agree with the "too much cherry" and Oktoberfest comment while adding that their light variety is probably one of the most complex light beers I've tried. Smooth, flavorful, and with a nice finish in contrast of the usual bite associated with other light beers.

I order the regular Sam Adams on occasion if at a restaurant where they don't have anything outside of the typical Bud, Coors, Miller, Corona, Heineken lineup. I don't like the light beer at all, but I hate all light beers. Not crazy about the Cherry Wheat or the Summer Wheat, but I do like the Winter lager a lot. Never had the Oktoberfest. All in all they're a definite notch above almost all other mass-distributed beers and they definitely get points for going out of there way to produce a lot of different styles, but they're clearly below several other smaller American breweries such as Dogfish Head, Rogue, Sierra Nevada, Redhook, etc.

The idea that regular Sam is now about as available as Bud is a great thing IMHO.

It's probably one of their best beers all things considered. Overall they are ok, but often not really true to style.

I like SA beers. Their Pale Ale and Boston Ale are my favs. The Octoberfest, Winter ale, Black lager, summer wheat, and Boston lager are all good too.

Sam Adams sucks, all their beers are way too sweet. Usually most places that have more than 3 beers on tap have a, hopefully local, decent alternative.

I've never tried it. Not sure if it is even available in Canada. At any rate, I'm much more interested in finding a good microbrewery than drinking any of the "big name" beers. (I guess Guiness would be the one exception.)

SA is okay, and I say that with a big yawn. Given the choice, I rarely order or buy the brand because the beers generally don't offer anything intriguing.

Like others, I really appreciate the fact that Sam Adams is readily available at places that otherwise only carry the crappiest mass-market American beers. I'll certainly take an SA any day over a Bud or Coors, though not over a Sierra Nevada, Redhook, etc.

No one has mentioned the Sam Adams Hefeweizen, but it is my wife's absolute favorite beer, and she is not really a beer drinker.

SA's Hefe is drinkable, but it's pretty mediocre compared to most German unfiltered wheats. There aren't a lot of good American hefeweizen's out there.

+1 except that a SA hefeweizen does not sound good at all.

I don't like Sam Adams for the same reason I don't like beers with names like “Strawberry-Blond-Wheat Seasonal” or “Corona” .
The brew is too sweet, overloaded with strange (for beer) flavors and has the most unpleasant aftertaste (muddy, unfiltered).
Sam Adams never has good foam (not sure why).
I'd rather order Becks , Pauliner, Check Pilsner or even Lager from Trader's Joe than SA.
On a side note, beer selection in most restaurants is abysmal.

I think the Boston ale is a great beer. In the right mood, I'd certainly choose it over other mass-market "micro" brews. The standard lager, not so much.

I think those comparing Sam's beers with "authentic" beers in various styles are missing the point.

Not a fan of Sam Adams. I like heavier and more flavorful beers. This is only Sam Adams I can drink. They call it the "Imperial Pilsner" but it tastes like a double Indian Pale Ale to me, due to the dominant flavor of the hops and accompanying bitterness.
