Still, we can wait and see.

More importantly, RL seems to be eliminating English made shoes.

Agree. The pebble grain Marlowe is one of two shoes that a NM SA asked if he could touch. It takes a hell of a shoe to make a fetishist publicly reveal himself like that. lefty P.S. Lauren's biggest criticism over the years is that his clothes don't fit anyone.

I certainly did not factor the cordovan market or RL's sourcing into my statement. If these are the case, then RL's typical pattern of markdowns may no longer be reliable.

Just received my Darltons. These are beautiful shoes. Cordovan is a gorgeous color. Workmanship is nice. The last is refined. So while the shoes are heavy, the overall effect is "chunky" not "clunky" or "gunboat" like the Alden or AE longwings. Unfortunately, I'll be in a suit tomorrow so won't get to wear them.

Ralph Lauren's clothing has always fit me pretty much perfectly off the rack. I think he cuts his men's clothing for tall and thin guys and that works great for me.

this is my first post. ive been lurking for a week or so, and have been very impressed by this forum. its head and shoulders above the one on men.style.com which i was frequenting before.

anyways, i just got my pair of darlton wingtips from polo today along with some martino ankle boots, both in size 12. i ordered them weds nite around 11pm pst, techinically before the sale even began. i flipped out when i saw the darltons. the last big sale in april(?) i actually passed up bentons to buy a pair of stantons, so i was very eager to get a pair of c and j made shoes now that i know what they are.

well the boots are definately going back, i cant even get the one open wide enough to slide onto my slightly larger right foot, and they just dont work with jeans like i was hoping they would. also i was surprised they have dainite soles given the product descritpion online, but i guess thats prolly best.

anyways im still on the fence about the wingtips. i think they are awesome shoes, but im not sure if they are right for me. i generally stay away from shoes that are chunky, since im a size 12, but with these wingtips i could not resist because they are just perfectly styled/proportioned. but like i said maybe these shoes arent for me. they are 13.25 inches long, which is a half inch longer than my stantons. and quite tall and just plain big! i mean they could easily be a murder weapon in the board game "clue." ill decide over the next few days, i wonder if anyone on here is a size 12. ill certainly ask if anyone wants them before sending them to polo if i decide that.

anyways after all that i do actually have a question. are these shoes double soled? they have a thick sole and also look just like the cardiff on the c and j website, which is double soled. what does a double sole do, functionally? are they more weatherproof? also, why is the leather folded up all around the bottom of the shoe where it meets the sole? is that a purely asthetic detail or not? i see on some shoes theres something called a storm welt, altho i cant tell what that is because they only have the top view on their website. thanks for any help, these are kinda noob questions i know, sorry!

Welcome to SF fusherino, I agree its a wealth of info and good people with exceptional taste!
Did your wingtips fit true to size?
Regards.
i think so. i actually dont know for sure how to answer that. the other size 12 dress shoes i have are both italian made polo shoes, stantons and a pair of penny loafer. both fit rather snugly, sometimes too snugly if ive been on my feet all day. the darlton wingtips have a little more room and fit more comfortably, more like they should. and i was on my feet all day at work.

in athletic shoes im really more of a size 12.5 or 13.

sorry im new to dress/leather soled shoes.

youre not kidding about those martinos. i have been looking like crazy for a pair of relatively sleek ankle boots that i could dress up a bit with flannel (and possibly even a suit on more casual occasions) - the boots were horrible for me even at the sale price. the instep is extremely narrow and they did not feel solidly constructed at all. also not a big fan of the fairly bulbous toe shape on them - very strange to have such a narrow fitting shoe through the body and then have that toe.

also, strange to hear they had dainite. i know the store had dainite soles but the web site clearly indicated they were leather soles. i dont know if they fit any better but the previous model (frances, i think) was a much, much more elegant last.

Yes, they are double soled.

Which brings you that much closer to heaven.

Or that much farther from hell.

Your call, really.

Just got my Darlton WT's and loafers...really nice shoes. I went down a half size to 10.5 and they fit perfectly. BTW, I am also supposed to receive the penny loafer in 10 US, which will be too small for me. If anyone wants them at my cost I will be glad to pass them along, or just sending them back to RP would be easist. I just thought that someone may have missed the sale...I got the full discount, free shipping, but had to pay Cali tax rate. Cheers.

Got my Marlow wingtip today. Was tracking it online until it was delivered. Here's some pictures.

Here's the Marlow with the Darlton pennyloafer I got from the previous Polo sale.

Last picture is a comparison of the #8 color with the brown cordovan. On left is an Alden captoe blucher in #8.
