How to distinguish real fur from fake?

post #1 of 5

I picked up a light grey double breasted overcoat with a (ostensibly) fur collar off of eBay at the beginning of the year. I like the coat but I am just wondering if the collar is legit. From all appearances, the coat is vintage and of course there is no fabric label.

How do you tell real fur from fake fur?

Take the collar off the coat and set it on fire. If it lights fast, has a plastic burning smell and leaves a clumpy ball, it's fake. Well, you could do it with a small snipping.. Here's an eBay guide you may not have read. A lot of time you can tell from feel with experience.

That's a pretty good guide actually.

Without having to set the collar on fire, try this;

Run your fingers through the fur until to get to the root of the hair. Then look at the base. Fake fur will typically be on a woven or knitted base, whereas real fur will, naturally, have a skin base.

If you killed the animal, you know it's real...
