there are many better ways to protect your house and family, and yourself, without resorting to guns.
Ok, so a guy is breaking into your house. He is desperate, naturally crazy, on crack, PCP, sniffing glue, or whatever. He comes in through a window (most burglars do) and you hear the sound of glass breaking. You call the police, gather your wife and kids, and huddle in a closet. He has a gun. You don't. Your children are trying not to make noise, but your youngest is confused and scared - and starts crying. You desperately try and calm her down knowing that if you let him take what he wants, he will most likely leave you alone. The burglar hears the whimpering child, and enters the room. He is wild eyed and frantic. He was looking for an easy buck, but he didn't expect that anyone was home. Whipping open the closet door, he becomes enraged when he sees your family huddled in the dark with the telephone. He figures that since you have already seen him, and called the police, and he is desperately low on other options, he might as well kill you and rape your wife in front of your children. You've already ruined his chances of getting away with the "easy buck". He wants to teach you a lesson. He knows he has time. You know that the fancy silent alarm system you had installed is going off, and the dog is out in the back yard, and the police are on the way, but its only been about three minutes. How much longer will they take to get there? National average for PRIORITY 1 calls (life threatening crime in progress) nine to fifteen minutes. Dramatic? Yes. But is it out of the realm of possibility? Definitely not. If you think things like this don't happen, even in the most affluent neighborhood suburbs, you are seriously mistaken. If you think a firearm in the hands of someone with proper training and a regular family safety drill wouldn't help, you are delusional. If you have any other REALISTIC suggestions as to how to resolve the situation without violence, you are obviously smarter than the dozens of people who are killed this way every year. Every time you decide to be passive, you are putting your life in the hands of an unknown CRIMINAL. Thats why it's a 50/50 chance. What are you going to do, pepper spray him? Taze him? Reason with him? Would you entrust your life to something that may not even be effective considering the circumstances, and that you had to get within arms reach to use? Not believing in guns is fine, I'm not going to infringe on your rights to not own guns, but berating those that do as irresponsible is completely illogical and insensitive. Criminals have guns (in some cases, better than the ones the police have) So in the absense (or tardiness) of the law, you have the right to defend yourself, your family, and your property. Granted, in the hands of someone who is not properly trained, and a family that is unprepared for a crisis, a gun in the house is as dangerous as not having one at all, but better to be prepared and not need it, than to need it and be unprepared. Whew.
